HP Lovecraft in 1936: 'The Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead'
Edited on Mon Nov-01-10 11:58 AM by BurtWorm
Cthulu was a Democrat!

http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/halloween-horror.html

“As for the Republicans—how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-handicraft world, and revel in (consciously or unconsciously) mendacious assumptions (such as the notion that real liberty is synonymous with the single detail of unrestricted economic license or that a rational planning of resource-distribution would contravene some vague and mystical ‘American heritage’…) utterly contrary to fact and without the slightest foundation in human experience? Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead.”

6. Dayum!
Still entirely accurate!

"unrestricted economic license" = "free trade" = "trickle down" = "flat earth" = "globalism"

True to his trademark verbosity, Lovecraft nails it.

9. I woulda never guessed
I mean the guy's personal views regarding race and culture had me pegging him as a generic right-leaner. Would also explain why he could never actually describe anything in his writings :)

Neat surprise.

25. Dude had some issue with Italians. For starters.
And it got rapidly worse from there. Not a person who I would choose as a life counselor. Especially on issues like when to seek medical help for that abdominal pain hurty thingy. Also not a prime candidate for a marriage counselor.

15. Wow, he mentioned all the key words to let me know he really "got it"
Lovecraft was definitely on the clue train in a big way. Good to know this.

This is actually one of the best brief attacks on right-wing ideas I've ever seen.

17. Wow...Lovecraft had the Repukes nailed over 60 years ago!
So why are they still around? I guess they aren't actually the dead but the un-dead, zombies being kept artificially animated by black magic spells.
