Feds take down political tags on AZ fence. ARPAIO regroups with anti-undocumented group
The wingnut/'Bagger/Minutemen's hysteria/xenophobia/racism moves into its election season phase, voter suppression/intimidation with fear-mongering about "illegals voting." Methinks the vast majority of undocumenteds are laborers who are focused on two things, 1) hiding from detention and 2) surviving, NOT on arcane and abstract pusuits like voting. But the REHNQUISTs and DAY-O'CONNORs will always be harassing minorities at the polls.

As for ARPAIO, any sign of backpeddling by him is amazing, isn't this the ONLY time he has ever appeared to do it? But it's just cosmetic.

Border Patrol requiring group to take down political messages from border fence

SIERRA VISTA, AZ - The U.S. Border Patrol is requiring a private volunteer border watch group to remove political messages attached to thousands of small flags placed on the U.S.-Mexican border fence in Cochise County.

About 16,000 flags and five banners were attached to the fence by members of the American Border Patrol group in early July to celebrate Independence Day and to urge the government to finish building 700 miles of double fencing. ....

Each flag contains a message from an individual American, and they've stayed on the fence ever since.

But last week, the Border Patrol told Spencer that his group must remove all the tags with the messages that are attached to the flags. Spencer said he will comply, but he does not understand the reason for the decision. ....

And next Fourth of July event, he said, the flags and tags will be mounted on the volunteer group's ranch property just north of the fence.

Group used Arpaio's name without his permission

.... Ban Amnesty Now President Sean McCaffrey said Friday that his group mocked up the e-mail in Arpaio's name, but never sought the sheriff's approval and that it was sent to 1 percent to 2 percent of the 1.3 million people on its distribution list.

"The content of the e-mail, I stand by it," said McCaffrey, who later put his own name on the e-mail after the mistake was discovered. "It came as a complete surprise to Sheriff Joe and his team."

McCaffrey, whose group opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, said he called Arpaio to apologize for Tuesday's e-mail and that the sheriff has taken a leave as the organization's honorary co-chairman. ....

The group has raised money in the past for prompting proposals throughout the nation that are similar to Arizona's new immigration law. The sheriff with a high public profile is known for his ability to raise money not only in Arizona but throughout the country.

The e-mail in question repeatedly said, "STOP Illegals from Stealing The Election!" It also said thousands of illegal immigrants were working to turn out voters who are sympathetic to them and quoted a prominent lawyer in the movement for local immigration enforcement as saying that the registration of immigrant voters has become pervasive.

"Our grassroots army of VOTER FRAUD PREVENTION VOLUNTEERS," the group said in its pitch, "will stand vigilant across the nation. We will be the first and strongest line of defense to ensure that only legal citizens vote on November 2nd, but to do this, we need your help today!" ....
