Let's List the violent attacks by the Right Wingers
1.Rand Paul's people assualt on the woman.
2.Raul Grijalva office under attack 3 times within a year.

There are 2 and I will let you help add to the list. I think it is time we have a comprehensive list as we possibly can since they try to claim stuff like this doesn't happen.

A Guide to Terrorism in America
Terrorism in America

<snip>

1980s: Right Wing Terrorism on the Rise

The radicalism of the 1960s and 1970s was followed by the conservatism of the Reagan era, in mainstream America. Political violence too, took a turn to the right. In the 1980s, white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups such as Aryan Nation saw a resurgence, often among working class white males, who perceived themselves as displaced by women, African Americans, Jews, and immigrants who benefited from new civil rights legislation.

Terrorism in the name of Christianity also surged in the 1980s and 1990s. Radical groups and individuals committed to violent action to stop abortion were among the most visible. Michael Bray, head of a group called the Army of God spent four years in prison for his abortion clinic bombings in the 1980s.

In 1999, the most lethal act of domestic violence to date occurred when Timothy McVeigh bombed the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people. McVeigh's stated motivation--revenge against a federal government that he viewed as intrusive and oppressive, was an extreme version of more mainstream desire among many for a smaller government. Dean Harvey Hicks, a citizen angry over his taxes, for example, created the one-man terrorist group "Up the IRS, Inc." and tried to bomb IRS locations.

Byron Williams attack follows numerous right-wing terrorism incidents in recent years
October 11, 2010 7:16 am ET — 3 Comments

As journalist John Hamilton wrote, Byron Williams was arrested after he allegedly opened fire on California Highway Patrol officers. Williams reportedly told investigators that "his intention was to start a revolution by traveling to San Francisco and killing people of importance at the Tides Foundation and the ACLU." Williams' alleged actions follow numerous right-wing terrorism attacks in past years.

he Domestic Terrorism of America's Right Wing
Posted by Dominic Holden on Wed, Mar 24, 2010 at 8:36 AM

The Buffalo News reports on the fourth case of vandalism—domestic terrorism, if you will—of Democratic offices:

The window broken Friday at the Niagara Falls office of Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, D-Fairport, was one of at least four cases of vandalism targeting Democratic offices across the country late last week during the debate over health care reform.

A window was also broken at the Monroe County Democratic headquarters in Rochester. In Tuscon, Ariz., a window at the office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also was broken. And at Democratic headquarters in Sedgewick County, Kan., a brick with anti-Obama and anti-health care messages was thrown.

In the South, militia man and organizer for the right Mike Vanderboeghsays that the bricks are simply an alternative to rifles:

"We can break their windows,” he said. “Break them NOW. And if we do a proper job, if we break the windows of hundreds, thousands, of Democrat party headquarters across this country, we might just wake up enough of them to make defending ourselves at the muzzle of a rifle unnecessary.”

But it sounds like the head of the Republican Party is ready to put Nancy Pelosi in front of a one of those rifles:

44. Aw man. There is just no violence by the GOP. No way! Pay no attention to this ---

••• None in the MSM dare give much national attention to the GOP's NAZI connection •••

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x9358240

Still active thread there, please keep kicked if you can.

In particular, pay no attention to Rich Iott (see the thread), the GOP nominee for Congress in Ohio running against Democrat Marcy Kaptur. Mr. Iott (yes I know, that sounds like "Mr. Riot") quit the Wiking Nazi group to run for Congress. Wiking practices being members of the Waffen SS WWII atrocity people and the Wiking.com site says that those in Eastern Europe who supported Hitler were only trying to fight the Bolshevik scourge and didn't do anything wrong! The group "reenacts" the Waffen SS Nazi warriors (in other words they practice being Nazis) for PURELY HISTORICAL PURPOSES! As in, REPEATING HISTORY. Here's Wiking's recruitment video, which was hastily taken off their site (Wiking.com) to cover for their COMRADE, but is still on Youtube at a completely different link here -----

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZa-dVFE0vg&feature=player_embedded#

Pay no attention to zat!

See more on all this at the above DU thread.

Vich is none of your bizhnisht!

By the way. I called WTVG 13 ABC in Toledo, OH, which has covered the Rich Iott story and brought the Wiking recruitment video to their attention and even sent them a copy of it in QuickTime on a CD and I had spoken with Jenna Lento, the assignment editor there in their newsroom, 419-534-3858 and she is now telling me her superior said they don't "need" to show it on the air since it doesn't have Iott in it personally (although actually if you look at the video, who knows). But as a member of the group Iott was doing the exact same things as on the video. So who cares what the COUNTRY needs to see. Their TV station doesn't need it! They're more important than the country! She also said the video is not local since it doesn't show Iott personally and they are a local station.

Blah, blah, blah!

I knew the MSM wouldn't bother to show it.

These people don't give a flying SH*T about any of this.

Keep in mind that they are an ABC affiliate but Ms. Lento, 419-534-3858 (newsroom), can't be bothered to take any of it seriously.

She also asked me if I was calling all stations or just hers. Like what does THAT matter? And I answered truthfully that I had only contacted her newsroom which I wonder if I should have said.

I call these people SICs.

What is a SIC?

A stupid, ignorant correspondent.

The MSM never tells anything about these things. The GOP can do no wrong to them.

Who the hell cares what they need? The question is what does the country need.

But no. They can't cover this. They're too important........

None of our business. Williams is just some local looney and it's got nothing to do with Beck or the GOP or anything. The MSM must deliver the official line that the Democrats are going to lose and the GOP will take over the House and they can do no wrong and any violence is local and has nothing to do with the GOP and right wing and Beck.

Violence in America? Better vote Republican.

Fiorina also says people close to her are on the no fly list. Of course, being Republican, they couldn't POSSIBLY deserve to be on that list!

If Fiorina wants people on the no-fly list to have guns, this is none of our business because Republicans for and with guns CAN DO NO WRONG and must be elected to Congress and the Senate.

The MSM must stick with the narrative that the GOP have no violence problem and are going to win!

But we don't need to think that Beck is fomenting violence. The MSM will tell us that only the left would do that!

Republicans are all law abiding citizens since they're ABOVE THE LAW AND CAN DO NO WRONG.

The MSM will tell us the GOP is going to take over the House of Representatives and it must be true and we must accept it and stay home unless we are Republican because the GOP is SNOW WHITE and TINKERBELL.

59. Gun Nuts
Edited on Thu Oct-28-10 12:27 AM by YaLiekDags
You know I'm a former Marine OIF IV & V vet, and a gun owner, albeit only 2 as opposed to an armory like these kooks. I oppose gun control, and have a concealed carry I got just for sh*ts and giggles because it was free to vets in my state. I'll admit the concealed carry permit stays in my gun locker with my guns, and that I only take my guns out to go to the range. But I guess I just don't fear the 1:1,000,000 chance that some group of "big bad minority boogeyman ninjas"(see;malnourished homeless person asking for spare change) is going jump me walking the two blocks from my apartment to 7-11, even if they did I'm pretty confident in my ability to defend myself without an assault rifle tricked out with eotech sights, a surefire taclite and the works. That said, I'm still a gun owner who supports gun rights. Though I don't exercise it, I even support concealed carry by individuals without mental/criminal problems and who can demonstrate their ability with such a device. One thing I won't do however is vote for a party that wants to abolish workers rights, destroy infrastructure, and essentially take our country back to the 1880's over an $800 machine. I mean does anyone else think the right just uses guns(and religion though I'm not nearly as keen on that) as a Red Herring to distract their voting lemmings from their real purpose, catering to corporations and the hyper wealthy. By the looks of it, and yes I'm stereotyping here, over half of these gentleman's jobs would be shipped to a third world country within a week if the Right had their way. But I guess they still own their super cool guns right? Jesus Christ, its like distracting kids with candy while you beat their mother.

On a side note maybe most of these gents do have a legitimate need for firearms to defend themselves against the malnourished homeles...err group of minority ninja boogiemen. By the looks of it they'd be tired half way through throwing their first punch, and really I doubt there cardiovascular endurance lends itself to running away much better.

EDIT: sorry its kind of long.

Too Long;Didn't Read: I support gun rights too, but its not a strong enough issue to get me to vote for biggots looking to f*ck me in every other way imaginable. I also make fun of fat rednecks.

Poverty in Kentucky
Data from the 2007 Poverty Rates for Kentucky and Counties Report, published by the U.S. Census Bureau, highlights the situation many living in Kentucky face. While the poverty rate of all people living in the United States was 13 percent in 2007, the poverty rate for Kentucky was 17.2 percent.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities contends the poverty level in Kentucky is getting worse as of 2010, with some 80,000 families living at or below the poverty line. A high percentage of these families have working family members. Fewer than 20 percent rely on welfare as their main means of support. The remaining families combine their paycheck with the assistance provided by the U.S. government and the state of Kentucky.

6. More GOP teabagger thugs on the attack, this time in CA
Hat-tip to: http://twitter.com/downwithtyranny/status/28812548933

Last week, the four candidates for the 50th District's House seat met for their only public debate before the November election.

<snip>

What had been peaceful sign-holding before the debate amped up into an in-your-face shout-fest by a well-organized group of Brian Bilbray supporters who encircled Busby. Their antics were disturbing because they were so unnecessary.

It was reminiscent of last year's protesters who took credit for shouting down members of Congress trying to discuss health care reform at town hall meetings. It was later revealed that they were urged on and scripted by the lobbying group Americans for Prosperity. That's the same group that recently held a rally for Bilbray at his Solana Beach office.

The taunting, heckling and the sarcastic questions shouted at Busby were meant to elicit that one comment or photo that could be edited to fit into the 'gotcha' politics that are commonplace today. That's probably why so many of the protesters had their phones and cameras zoomed in on Busby, who ignored the chaos around her while she greeted and chatted with her supporters.

20100909 NC man charged in abortion clinic bomb plot
Last Updated by mikeconwell on Sep 10

McClatchy: A Concord, N.C., man was charged with describing how to make explosives, in an effort to bomb an abortion clinic, after FBI agents found instructions on the man's Facebook page and caught him in a sting, officials said Thursday.

Justin Carl Moose, 26, is a self-described "extremist, radical" and the "Christian counterpart of Osama bin Laden," according to an affidavit filed by FBI agents. Agents arrested Moose, who lives in a northwest Concord neighborhood, on Tuesday.

His arrest followed an investigation that began after Planned Parenthood alerted the FBI to a Facebook page registered to Moose, which the group said was advocating extreme violence against abortion providers.

Huffington Post: A press assistant for the National Republican Congressional Campaign tweeted the home addresses of campaign staffers for Rep. Tom Perriello (D-Va.) Tuesday night.

Andy Sere, a press hand for the NRCC who handles southern congressional races, made the highly unorthodox move after Perriello's staff called the chief of staff of his opponent, state senator Robert Hurt, a "carpetbagger". Sere responded with six separate tweets noting each staffer that Perriello himself employed from out of the district and calling on the Virginia Democrat to fire those aides or risk being labeled a hypocrite.

20100902 Arson closes Planned Parenthood Clinic
Last Updated by mikeconwell on Sep 5

KFSN TV: "Upon arrival responding officers discovered that Planned Parenthood had been attacked by an unknown person with an incendiary device." said Madera Police Chief Michael Kime.

Madera Police do not have anyone in custody but a spokesperson with Planned Parenthood says she has a good idea of who it might be.

"I believe it's extremists who are, want to make a statement." said public affairs director Pasty Montgomery.

This attack comes just one week after someone targeted a local Muslim mosque across town. Investigators found a brick thrown through the window and anti-Muslim signs posted on the walls.

Closure for repairs is expected to last through the week following Labor Day weekend.

20100831 Carlton Police charge five youths
Last Updated by mikeconwell on Sep 7

The Post-Standard Editorial BoardA disturbing pattern of anti-Islamic acts is coinciding with the debate about building an Islamic center near Ground Zero.

On Tuesday, police in Carlton in Western New York charged five teens with disrupting a religious service. The teens are accused of honking car horns and yelling obscenities outside the World Sufi Foundation Mosque. One of the teens is accused of firing a shotgun near the mosque.

A member there said a group has been showing up outside the mosque for about three weeks and harassing the congregation. Another member said the incidents rise above pranks to “an aggressive act of hatred.”

According to court charging documents, a fight broke out inside the 7-Eleven store at 362 Denny Way just after 12:30 a.m. Aug. 24 when Stainbrook threw change at a stranger and punched him in the head.

Stainbrook was heard telling the man "you're not even an American, you're al-Qaida. Go back to your country," charging paperwork said.

20100820 Vandalism at Islamic Center linked to NYC Ctr debate
Last Updated by mikeconwell on Aug 26

Fresno Bee: It was the latest in a series of incidents that the Madera County Sheriff's Department is investigating as hate crimes. On Sunday, a brick nearly smashed a window at the center on Road 26 just outside Madera. Last week, another sign left on the property read "No temple for the god of terrorism "

Signs left at the mosque claimed to be from a group called the "American Nationalist Brotherhood." Sheriff's officials said they hadn't heard of such an organization.

Some local Muslims worry that talk radio hosts who have repeatedly invited callers to express their anger about the controversy surrounding a proposed Islamic center near the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City are fanning flames of intolerance -- and putting their families in danger.

20100801 Arlington Mosque reports Arson, Vandalism
Last Updated by mikeconwell on Aug 2

Fort Worth Star Telegram: About 1 a.m. Sunday, police and firefighters responded to a call about a fire that destroyed playground equipment at the mosque, the Dar El-Eman Islamic Education Center in the XXXX block of Mansfield Road.

Schoolchildren, who are between 5 and 14, relatives, neighbors and friends raised money to buy the equipment, Principal Amalia Awaida said Wednesday.

Investigators don't yet know whether the incidents are related. The fire did about $20,000 in damage, and arson is suspected, according to a news release from the Arlington Fire Department.

Vandals also cut some copper tubing. Members said they believe the vandals thought the tubing was for natural gas, but as it turns out, the tubes were water lines.

Thomas Franklin Tuso, 34, of Duncannon, was charged with receiving stolen property, theft and other charges in connection with the incident.

Both were arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Charles A. Clement Jr. Saturday.

Chicago Sun Times: U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton received hundreds of threats at her court offices within hours of her ruling last week on Arizona's tough and controversial immigration law.

"She has been inundated," said U.S. Marshal David Gonzales, indicating his agents are taking some seriously. "About 99.9 percent of the inappropriate comments are people venting. 25. Plane crash puts spotlight on anti-government sentiment
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 08:25 AM by Ian David
Federal employees and their unions say an act of domestic terrorism in Texas is the latest worrisome sign of growing anti-government hostility across the country.

Andrew Joseph Stack III, 53, yesterday crashed his small plane into an Austin building housing the IRS and other government agencies, killing himself and one other person. More than 190 IRS employees were in the building at the time, according to an IRS spokesman.

Stack left behind a lengthy note that blamed the federal government for helping the wealthy and hurting ordinary people. And he complained specifically about the IRS, which he said was unresponsive to his complaints.

<snip>

On blogs and in e-mails, federal employees said the attack fits into a pattern of escalating anti-government rhetoric. "This won't be the last episode," a Defense Department employee wrote on a forum used by federal employees; "another crazy," said a Federal Aviation Administration staffer. One IRS employee, in an e-mail to Federal Times, blamed the attack on conservative media personalities like Glenn Beck.

Glenn Beck Responds To Austin Plane Crash: ‘God Doesn’t Send Killers’

In case you ever wondered what it might be like to watch Glenn Beck cover a breaking news event, his reaction to today’s Austin plane crash was a pretty good hint. Answer is: he didn’t do too bad (all things considered), though, truth be told, I did spend the first fifteen minutes of his show holding my breath waiting for him to say something truly career-ending.

Instead, Beck railed against the violent actions of “someone we don’t know very well, yet,” pilot Joseph Stack who allegedly flew his plane into an Austin IRS office building, leaving behind both a manifesto and a suicide note. And he didn’t mince words.

We have no idea what this man’s ideology was…he could be from the left, he hates capitalism, he has an anti-business creed that goes on and on. It sounds like anything you could hear in a speech from Van Jones. When you read his anti-tax ravings and his anti-tax or IRS stuff it sounds like you could be reading bumper stickers off the cars or the signs of the Tea Party. We have no idea. But here’s the point. I have no idea if he’s left or right. Is he a communist or a radical constitutionalist. Here’s the point: it doesn’t matter. The guy is a killer.

<snip>

Later, Beck took to the chalkboard and came thisclose to suggesting that President Obama is very close to allowing radicals like Stack into his inner circle, though he did manage to note that Van Jones “hasn’t killed anybody.” He also emphatically suggested that the country needs to “get away from anybody who’s calling for a revolution…whether it’s a Tea Party revolution or a communist one.” No more Tea Parties for Beck? Not sure I buy that, unless Stack’s anti-government extreme put the scare in Beck (many would argue Beck has a ‘chalkboard manifesto’ of sorts…is he trying to distance himself?). It will be interesting to see how much of this “separation of radicals” is going to make it into his CPAC address this weekend. Video below.

Joseph Stack's suicide note
Joseph Stack, the man said to have crashed his plane into an IRS office building in Austin, left a paranoid suicide note

Horrendous events today in Austin, the state capital of Texas, where a man flew a single-engined airplane into the side of an office building. The plane belonged to Joseph Andrew Stack, a 53-year-old software engineer, who left a long, rambling biographical suicide note that expressed anger at US tax laws, accountants and the Internal Revenue Service.

<snip>

Stack's suicide note was posted on the internet, and goes into detail of his brushes with the tax authorities over the years, before concluding:

"I can only hope that the numbers quickly get too big to be white washed and ignored that the American zombies wake up and revolt; it will take nothing less. I would only hope that by striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction that results in more stupid draconian restrictions people wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are. Sadly, though I spent my entire life trying to believe it wasn't so, but violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer."

Stack's suicide note has an erie echo of the 1993 movie Falling Down, which starred Michael Douglas as a divorced, middle-aged engineer, laid off during the defence cuts of the early 1990s, who goes on a violent rampage through Los Angeles.

Looking Closer at Joseph Stack

Joseph Stack -- remember him? He's the guy who crashed his plane into an Internal Revenue Service building in Austin last week. Fifty-three years old, Stack killed one IRS manager, Vernon Hunter, and wounded 13 more before killing himself, but you'd be forgiven for forgetting his name, because he largely fell out of the news in the days afterward...

That's not so say there hasn't been howling. When Stack's daughter told ABC's Good Morning America that she considered her father a hero there was outrage, and reasonably so. Facebook fan pages praising Stack have shown up with links to right-wing, so-called patriot groups and at the CPAC conservative organizing meeting in DC more than one GOP member referred sympathetically to Stack's anti-government views.

Outrage at all of that's utterly justified. Sympathy with a bomber puts the lie to the extreme right's claim to reject violence. Someone who carries out premeditated deadly force against civilians to make a political point is by virtually any definition a terrorist, not a hero. Stack remodeled his plane so as to pack it with extra fuel, left a manifesto, took the life of an innocent man.

If Stack had been an Arab or a Muslim, you can bet this story would still be getting blaring headlines and front page news coverage. As one of my Twitter friends wrote, "What, if you own your own plane you can't be a terrorist?"

<snip>

Huh? Since when is attempting to blow up a federal building NOT an act of domestic terrorism?

Fox News' anchors seemed eager to assure viewers today that the plane-crash attack on IRS offices in Austin this morning was not an act of domestic terrorism.

Oh really?

Now, it's true that Homeland Security officials originally released this statement:

“We believe there’s no nexus with criminal or terrorist activity”

They later amended this to just say "terrorist activity." Fox's Catherine Herridge also reported that Homeland Security officials had briefed President Obama on the incident, and that he had been told "this was not an act of terrorism."

So how did Fox's anchors interpret all this?

21. Tennessee Unitarian church shooter Jim David Adkisson
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 08:13 AM by Ian David
Tennessee church shooter Jim David Adkisson

In February 2009, Jim David Adkisson was sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of two and the wounding of six others at a Tennessee church in July 2008.

Adkisson targeted church because he hated liberal politics. As the Associated Press noted when he was sentenced, Adkisson attacked the church "because he hated its liberal politics. ... Assistant District Attorney Leslie Nassios said Adkisson gave a statement to police and left a suicide note. They showed he planned the attack on the church, where his ex-wife was once a member, because he hated the church's liberal politics and Democrats, whom he believed 'were responsible for his woes.' The Unitarian Universalist church promotes progressive social work, including advocacy of women and gay rights."

Adkisson: "Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate and House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg's book." The Knoxville News Sentinel reported on February 9, 2009, of a piece of writing from Adkisson stating his rationale for the shooting:

Inside the house, officers found "Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder" by radio talk show host Michael Savage, "Let Freedom Ring" by talk show host Sean Hannity, and "The O'Reilly Factor," by television talk show host Bill O'Reilly.

The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday's mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of "the liberal movement," and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.

Adkisson, 58, of Powell wrote a four-page letter in which he stated his "hatred of the liberal movement," Owen said. "Liberals in general, as well as gays."

Adkisson is accused of killing two people and injuring seven others. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Greg McKendry, 60. Also killed in the shooting was Linda Kraeger, 61, who was visiting the church from Westside Unitarian Universalist Church.

Glenn Beck Spins the Holocaust Museum Shooting

Glenn Beck and his fellow wingnuts proclaim Holocaust Museum shooter not a right-winger

<snip>

Actually, Beck has this exactly right. But frankly, it's boiling because of people like Glenn Beck, ranting hysterically every night about impending apocalypses of various forms -- looming "liberal fascism," the "economic meltdown," the "New World Order," violence spilling over the Mexican border, even FEMA concentration camps.

As I tried to explain in the case of the shooting of Dr. George Tiller, when you spread far-right conspiracy theories through mainstream channels the way Beck does with such abandon, it not only validates their beliefs, it rather hyper-validates them: It tells these people -- who see the Becks and O'Reillys as part of the "liberal media" -- that things are even worse than they thought, and it often spurs them into action.

But Beck, naturally, has no intention of observing this reality. He's running as hard in the other direction as he possibly can:

20. Pentagon Shooter Was Right-Wing, Anti-Government Terrorist
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 08:05 AM by Ian David
Pentagon Shooter Was Right-Wing, Anti-Government Terrorist

Last night, a California man armed with two semiautomatic weapons and “many magazines” of ammunition opened fire on police officers at the entrance to the Pentagon, wounding two before being killed by police. The shooter, 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell, was “well dressed in a suit” and “very calm,” walking “very directly to the officers” before engaging them, a police spokesman said.

Bedell “appears to have been a right-wing extremist with virulent antigovernment feelings,” the Christian Science Monitor reports, who traveled from California specifically to attack the Pentagon. While police were hesitant to assign a motive, “writings by someone with his same name and birth date, posted on the Internet, express ill will toward the government and the armed forces and question whether Washington itself might have been behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.”

In one posting, Bedell ranted against “big government.” In another, he wrote, “I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow” — a Marine whose suicide has been the subject of conspiracy theories — because it would be a “step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions.”

In podcasts, Bedell propagated his conspiracy theories, which eerily reflect fringe right-wing rhetoric:

Audio: Pentagon shooter manifesto reveals a right-wing, anti-government philosophy

New details are emerging on the Pentagon shooter John Patrick Bedell. Bedell opened fire on Pentagon guards yesterday outside of a Subway entrance. He injured two security personnel before being shot in the head and subsequently died from his injuries in the hospital.

In an audio clip he posted on the internet entitled "Directions to Freedom" Bedell praises private property for its ability to save the world and decries the alleged takeover of the economy by government. Some of the quotes from Bedell's manifesto have been posted by Talking Points Memo and can be read below. An audio clip of Bedell can also be listend to below.

The Pentagon shooter, insurrectionism, and right-wing bloggers

When news broke last Thursday that a deranged gunman had opened fire outside a Pentagon security checkpoint, wounding two officers before being stopped by return fire (the gunman later died from his wounds), the reaction from some oddly giddy right-wing bloggers was swift. They wanted everyone to pay attention to the story. Why? Because bloggers claimed the gunman, John Patrick Bedell, was a loony liberal.

Under increased scrutiny for the rampant anti-government rhetoric of the Tea Party movement, along with its often violent imagery and open talk of insurrection, right-wingers seemed anxious, even frantic, to hold up the Pentagon killer as proof that they weren't responsible for -- or connected with -- every political act of vigilante violence that makes headlines these days.

But as more details emerge about the incident, the far-right bloggers may wish they hadn't shone a spotlight on the disturbing Pentagon story. If anything, as we learn more about the anti-government rantings and writings of Bedell, this madman attack looks an awful lot like a string of other "lone wolf" attacks, such as the recent kamikaze pilot who flew his plane into an IRS office in Austin.

They're attacks that appear to be fueled by an almost pathological hatred for the U.S. government -- the same open hatred that right-wing bloggers, AM talk radio hosts, Fox News' lineup of anti-government prophets, and Tea Party leaders have been frantically fueling for the last year; pushing radical propaganda and warning of America's permanent, democratic demise under President Obama.

22. "Pop" Poplawski, the high-def hucksters, and the downward cycle of violence
"Pop" Poplawski, the high-def hucksters, and the downward cycle of violence

August 09, 2010 12:50 pm ET by Will Bunch

<snip>

Richard "Pop" Poplawski has fans now.

You probably remember Poplawski, or if you don't it won't take much to refresh your memory. He's the aimless, unemployed 22-year-old man, living in a red-brick working class neighborhood of Pittsburgh, who went off on the morning of April 4, 2009, the 41st anniversary of the shooting of Martin Luther King Jr. When he was done firing his extensive arsenal including an AK-47 style semi-automatic, he'd fatally gunned down three Pittsburgh police officers who came to his house, initially, over a domestic dispute with his mom. There was a brief stir -- perhaps too brief, in hindsight -- when a friend told TV reporters that Poplawski feared that with Barack Obama in the White House the government would confiscate his guns.

Last week, I got an email alert that a man from just a few miles down the Allegheny River from where Poplawski carried out his murderous rampage was going to jail for violating his probabtion by stockpiling 10 firearms and a cache of ammunition. Federal authorities contacted local police after they learned online that 32-year-old Hardy Lloyd was a big fan of Poplawski:

<snip>

This January, I spent several days in Pittsburgh investigating the Poplawski case and seeking to learn more about what really motivated him to kill three police officers. The research was for a chapter in my book, The Backlash: Right-Wing Radicals, High-Def Hucksters and Paranoid Politics in the Age of Obama, which comes out at the end of the month. I learned quite a bit -- including a couple of new details about the shooting and Poplawski's past that will be revealed when the book is published. But the main thing was that Poplawski's fears about the "Obama gun confiscation" was the proverbial tip of the iceberg when it came to his increasingly paranoid ideas that he seemed to glean largely from talk radio and from Beck.

"Rich, like myself, loved Glenn Beck," Poplawski's best friend Eddie Perkovic told me during a long interview in his narrow rowhouse on the steep hill running down to the Allegheny. (Perkovic had a lot of time -- he was wearing an ankle bracelet for house arrest because of an unrelated case.) Perkovic and his mom -- who also had a close relationship with the accused cop-killer, still awaiting trial -- told me that for months Poplawski had been obsessed with an idea -- frequently discussed by Beck, including in ads for his sponsor Food Insurance -- of the need to stockpile food and even toilet paper for a societal breakdown. Poplawski was also convinced that paper money would become worthless -- another claim given credence by the Fox News Channel host, particularly in close connection with his frequent shilling for the now-under-investigation gold-coin peddler Goldline International.

Under fire for promoting violence, Beck doubles down to rally support for "radical" gun group

October 18, 2010 3:28 pm ET by Will Bunch

Under fire for violent rhetoric and at least two cases in which fans of his nationally televised conspiracy rants went on shooting sprees against cops, Glenn Beck is doubling down on guns.

Exactly one week before Election Day, the Fox News host is traveling to Colorado to speak on behalf of a self-proclaimed "radical" gun rights group that has compared the rival National Rifle Association to the appeasement of Neville Chamberlain and which lobbied ferociously against Colorado's efforts to pass gun laws in response to the 1999 massacre of 13 people at Columbine High School.

The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners -- founded by Colorado-based GOP activist Dudley Brown who also runs a national umbrella group called the National Association for Gun Rights -- is bringing Beck to Colorado Springs as part of a western swing for Beck that includes the right-wing media maven's standard high ticket prices and the sponsorship of an odd assortment of extreme right-wing groups.

Here's Brown's official announcement of the Oct. 26 event:

On Tuesday evening, October 26th, at the Colorado Springs World Arena, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners is proud to sponsor...Glenn Beck! Barely two weeks from today, Glenn Beck and I will be speaking to a group of thousands of conservatively-minded citizens.Seating is limited so you'll have to act quickly.

24. Poplawski's neo-Nazi activism included posting Glenn Beck video, but media talk about dog pee
Poplawski's neo-Nazi activism included posting Glenn Beck video, but media talk about dog pee

An astonishing thing seems to have happened to the case of Richard Poplawski and the three dead Pittsburgh policemen: It's been turned into a story about dog pee -- and not about the fact that Poplawski was fueled by a toxic mix of white-supremacist/conspiracy-theorist paranoia and mainstream-media fearmongering, including from the likes of Glenn Beck and Fox News.

Maybe the media are collectively embarrassed by the way this case demonstrates how they play an important role in whipping up the far-right crazies out there -- and they should be. Because not only did Richard Poplawski avidly participate in white-supremacist online forums and right-wing conspiracy-theory sites, he also avidly consumed mainstream conservative media, particularly Fox.

The classic instance of this: A few weeks ago, Poplawski posted a clip of Beck talking about FEMA concentration camps on the neo-Nazi Stormfront forum site. (You can see the clip from the show in question above.)

Eric Boehlert at Media Matters noticed yesterday that the New York Times completely ignored the white-supremacy aspect of the story, running an AP story that only briefly alluded to Poplawski's paranoiac fears and instead focused on the dog-pee-on-the-carpet angle. David Waldman at Daily Kos noted a similar trend.

<snip>

The ADL report also delves his love of Alex Jones' conspiracy theories. Roddy has more details on this today. Boehlert observes that this is the same Alex Jones who's been prominently featured on Fox News lately.

This is a classic example of how "the Transmission Belt", by which far-right ideas are borne into the mainstream of American political discourse, actually works -- "how stuff gets essentially a trial run in ... the far right, and the messages will get refined, and then they'll be picked up by these intermediary groups and individuals, and refined some more, and then there'll be a buzz that's created, and then that gets media attention in the mainstream press."

580 CHP Assassin Was Headed to ACLU, Tides Center. Why Tides?

Hearing that 45-year-old Byron Williams, the heavily-armed and bulletproof-vested ex-con who got in a shootout this week with the California Highway Patrol after an I-580 traffic stop, was headed to the ACLU and The Tides Center to kill liberals made us wonder: how had this ignorant two-striker from Groveland who lived with his mom (and broke into her gun case to steal her guns for his aborted raid on liberal institutions) ever even heard of Tides?

The Tides Center, located at the Presidio, is essentially an aggregator of wealthy heirs’ money, who want to do good but would rather not be bothered doing the due diligence responsible philanthropy requires nowadays. They do that homework, and meet their donors’ overall goals without bothering them with the specifics of each beneficiary’s every operation.

They also provide spectacular conference center space — I attended great day-long team-building exercises when working for a non-profit San Francisco AIDS service organization, thanks to a colleague’s wife who worked at Tides — with quiet and peaceful views of the Golden Gate bridge. Contemplative, dedicated to social justice, low-profile, but essentially a capacity-building, incubator-providing, infrastructure-enabling clearing house for do-good inherited wealth: here’s Tides’ mission statement, from their website.

I'm so sorry that I don't recall his name. I believe that he is Costa Rican, and his grief at hearing the news of his son's death caused him to lock himself in the military's car and light himself on fire. After he recovered, the dear soul then went about DC with a mock coffin he pulled on a wagon, often during protests...until the day that rethuglicans beat him in the streets. I think about him often, what a sweet, gentle, grieving soul he is. I'm ashamed that I don't recall his name nor the name of his deceased son.

Gold Star Father Who Lost Son In Iraq Allegedly Beaten By Members Of Pro-War Group

We brought you Adam Kokesh's incredible speech from last Saturday's Iraq protests in Washington D.C., and unfortunately, there was an incident that occurred that day that was so disgusting it defies description.

Via After Downing Street:

Here are photos of members of "Gathering of Eagles" who assaulted gold star father Carlos Arredondo in broad daylight in Washington, D.C., on September 15, 2007, throwing him to the ground and kicking him.

Account of what happened from Arredondo's wife By Mélida Arredondo:

Carlos Arredondo, 47 year old father of two sons, arrived in the nation's capitol on Monday, 09/10/07 to share a memorial he has made to honor for his eldest son, Alex. Carlos has visited thirty of the United States with the traveling memorial to his son Alexander. Lcpl. Alexander S. Arredondo, USMC was killed on 08/25/04. He was 20 years and 20 days old. The memorial consists of a casket, poster- size photographs of Alex when he graduated from boot camp, before his second tour in Iraq, lying in state at his wake, and a photo of Alex with his younger brother Brian.

Saturday, September 15, 2007 consisted of first a rally, a march towards the capitol and then a die-in. Carlos pulled the memorial along the march route approaching the rotunda near the capitol building. Several of the marchers requested for him to speak about the memorial where a crowd gathered around him. After finishing, several people walked with Carlos as he pulled the memorial. Several pictures of Alex dressed in his blues were attached to the display.

As Carlos passed counter protesters, one man ripped a picture of Alex from the memorial. Carlos leaped on the man to retrieve the picture. It was at that point that approximately five others all began to attack Carlos by kicking him in the head, legs, stomach and back.

Father torches van after news of son's death
Thursday, August 26, 2004 Posted: 12:56 AM EDT (0456 GMT)

(CNN) -- After being informed that his 20-year-old son was killed while serving in Iraq, a Florida man doused a U.S. government van with gasoline and set it on fire while sitting inside.

Carlos Arredondo, 44, was severely burned and rushed to Hollywood Regional Hospital in Florida after learning that Pfc. Alexander Arredondo had died, police said.

"He suffered serious burns," said Detective Carlos Negron.

Negron said the young man was killed in Iraq Tuesday.

"Devilfish" Admits Sending Death Threats to Latino Civil Rights Groups

New Jersey Man Pleads Guilty to Threatening
Employees of Latino Civil Rights Organizations

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 20, 2010 — The Justice Department announced today that Vincent Johnson of Brick, N.J., who went by the internet pseudonym “Devilfish,” pleaded guilty in federal court in Trenton, N.J., to multiple charges related to a series of threatening communications he sent to employees of five civil rights organizations that work to improve opportunities for, and challenge discrimination against, Latinos in the United States.

During the plea proceedings, and in documents filed in court, Johnson admitted that from November 2006 to February 2009, he repeatedly sent threatening email communications to employees of the LatinoJustice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund; the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund; the National Council of La Raza; the League of United Latin American Citizens; and the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders.

Examples of Johnson’s threatening language include: “Do you have a last will and testament? If not, better get one real soon.”; “I am giving you fair warning that your presence and position is being tracked…you are dead meat…along with anyone else in your organization.”; “My preference would be to buy more ammunition to deal with the growing chaos created by the pro-illegal alien groups. RIP who are not the friends of our democracy.”; and “After reading the article below can you give me simply one good reason why someone should not put a bullet between your eyes for your actions that are promoting lawlessness in this country?” Johnson admitted that his threats were intended to intimidate the victims in order to prevent them from aiding persons of Latino descent.

“Threats of hate-fueled violence because of the color of someone’s skin, the language they speak or the country from which they come, will not be tolerated in this country,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “The defendant’s conviction should send a clear message to others who would carry out similar criminal acts that they will be brought to justice and held accountable for their actions.”

62. Death threats against Michael Newdow
Person of the Week: Michael Newdow

Thank God for Michael Newdow. If this plucky atheist hadn't stood up for what he believes in, we might still be talking about things that have lasting impact, like the financial meltdown of WorldCom. We might be rehashing news of terrorist threats, or babbling about homeland security, or remembering that there's a World Cup going on. So for cleverly distracting us from these unpleasant topics, Newdow is our person of the week.

We should all thank Newdow for giving us a reason to hope that one day, in the not-too-distant future, we will return to the America of September 10, 2001. To return to those days when we had nothing better to do than bicker over really critical issues like which politician is the most patriotic, or who has the biggest flag on the block. Thanks to Newdow's lawsuit charging the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional (due to that "under God" phrase), we've become reacquainted with that comforting place where flag-waving carries no sorrowful undertones, only simple pride or defiance.

<snip>

Newdow, meanwhile, spent the week racking up quite a collection of death threats, some vague, some specific, and most of them left on his home answering machine. He seemed quite unmoved by the ire of his fellow citizens, taking reporters around his rose garden Thursday and shrugging off criticism. And then, as if he knew precisely how to annoy his new enemies most, he mused on Thursday's Today show, "I believe I am strengthening the Constitution with my case."

Dixie Chicks 'get death threats'

The Dixie Chicks have said they fear for their lives following the backlash against singer Natalie Maines' comments about US President George Bush.

The band say they have received death threats after Maines told a London audience she was ashamed that Mr Bush came from her home state, Texas.

<snip>

Robison said: "I'm concerned about my safety. I'm concerned about my safety for my family.

"When you're getting death threats... at our concerts this year, we have to have metal detectors, and to me that's just crazy.

Swastika painted outside Congressman’s office

By CHRISTIAN BOONE

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The debate over health care took an ugly turn Tuesday morning after a swastika was found painted outside of Congressman David Scott’s Smyrna office.

The incident follows national coverage of Scott’s encounter with a citizen opposed to heath care reform at a recent town hall in Douglasville. That forum’s topic was not health care, but reconstruction of Ga. 92.

Since then the 13th district representative’s two local offices have been flooded with angry phone calls, faxes and e-mails.

Washington Man Arrested For Allegedly Assaulting Anti-Rossi Protester

A 72-year-old man was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly assaulting a 23-year-old activist protesting Dino Rossi's Republican campaign for Senate in Washington state, according to local reports.

The incident occurred outside GOP headquarters in Walla Walla County where the demonstrator, Christie Stordeur, was "one of five protesters standing about 40 feet from the entrance of the office," according to the Tri-City Herald.

Stordeur and the other protesters "were wearing bags over their heads and holding a sign that looked like a check." That's when Victor Phillips, according to a Sheriff's deputy on scene, walked over to Stordeur to "lift her bag off her head." When Stordeur "lifted her arm in defense," Phillips hit it "with 'force.'"

The Herald reports that the deputy on scene "immediately stepped between the two and arrested Phillips on a charge of investigation of assault."

(Calif.) DMV investigates note sent to transgender woman

<snip>

The usually painful experience at the DMV became a traumatic one last week for Amber Yust. A transgender woman, Yust went to the San Francisco branch to legally change her name on her driver's license.

A few days later a letter was mailed to her house. The writer claims to be the DMV clerk who helped her and then went on to say being transgender is "evil." He urged her not to go through with the transition from man to woman. He said Yust is going to hell.

"Understandably, I think, she was scared to get a letter sent to her home from a state employee who presumably found out her address through his official capacity as a state employee and it was an incredibly harassing and traumatizing experience for her," Kristina Wertz, legal director of the Transgender Law Center, said.

After Sharron Angle went on ABC News and basically reiterated her "Second Amendment remedies" statements and repeated that if Republicans don't like the election results, they may end up turning to their guns, or armed insurrection, Rachel Maddow asks, just what does a Republican political candidate have to say these days to finally be considered out of the mainstream?

Charlie Wilson's War: Man Who Threatened Patty Murray Ends Up Aiding Her Re-election

Thanks to his stupidity, some fortunate timing, the siren call of Glenn Beck, and an FBI agent posing as a Tea Partier, Charles Alan Wilson, the 64-year-old Selah man who threatened to kill Sen. Patty Murray, has instead given a likely boost to the incumbent's once-flagging campaign. "You're dead fucking meat, Murray! You're dead fucking meat! Baby killer, Murray," Wilson said in one of the nicer phone messages he began leaving on Murray's Seattle office recording machine in late March.
