Jim DeMint stated that if the republicans don't "live up to their principles" after the November election, the party is "dead".

Some here have been saying for a year or so that the GOP is in real trouble because they have tried to control the extreme crazy right - and failed. Evidently we are not the only ones who feel that way. They eliminated or marginalized theor own moderates, embraced the crazy right instead, and find themselves struggling to stay ahead of the Democrats who seem to be gaining some of those moderate votes while keeping its own base more or less intact, despite media statements to the contrary.

1. How do you square this with current poll results?
I guess the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

6. The polls - as of this week - show Democrats gaining or passing republicans
in a lot of races, but you know the old saying - there's lies, damn lies and statistics-which includes polls in there somewhere...

12. Thanks Mark, I haven't been watching the polls for a couple of weeks.
Hurt my foot a couple of weeks ago and I've been laid up. Just now starting to socialize again.

3. Looks like Dr. Deminto is about to throw his hat in the ring.

My "Senator"....sigh.

Although DeMint comes up with the same prognosis, his causative agent is certainly a polar opposite of what any sane person believes.

4. I've been saying this for a while
There is a sizable segment of Democrats (some posting here) who actually seem like moderate Republicans of the old school. They're the ones who can't be comfortable with the Repug crazies, but aren't comfortable with FDR type policies. They've dragged the Democratic Party rightwards. And in a way it's hurt us, but maybe in another way it expands us. However it's confusing. And it impedes progress by slowing us down.

7. I have been very critical of Obama for being so moderate, but he seems to be
gaining some of those votes for us. The "big tent" Democratic Party might be a little strained to take all of us, but I think we can do it.

I have been saying this for a year or so myself - IF we GOTV this November and keep the GOP well in the minority, maybe even make some gains, there will be serious damage to the "real" GOP, leaving the various RW groups to fight with each other...
and making things very hard for them in 2012.

15. As usual, I do not agree with DeMented.
There is a very good reason why Democrats have won only one Midterm election since 1990. When the chips are down, the Republicans are able to turn out their base while the Democrats don't. The Republicans don't waste time with swing voters and the mushy middle--because the mushy middle is exactly that--it bounces back and forth between the parties with zero predictability.

The Republicans have an inherent structural advantage when it comes to elections.

16. I really don't think they have an advantage
They win through lies, tricks, confusing people, playing on fears, cheating and an advantage in wealth. Every election since LBJ has had some sort of questionable thing that got a republicon elected unless there was some scandal that could not be denied like Nixon or a "read my lips" betrayal. The rich are a small minority that have tricked the south into voting their way through scare tactics. If people really did vote with their working people group and not some scared gun or religious hate group the republicons would be so out of power they would be forgotten. If they didn't have corporate money bank rolling their elections the party would not even exist.
