Montana woman fights bear using courgette
A woman from the US state of Montana has fought off a 200lb (91kg) black bear with a courgette from her garden.

The bear attacked one of the woman's dogs on the back porch of her home late on Wednesday evening, Missoula County Sheriff's Lt Rich Maricelli said.

When the woman tried to stop the attack, the bear swiped at her leg.

The woman, whom police have not named, grabbed the closest object - a courgette from her garden - and threw it at the bear, causing it to flee.

5. So now we have the British (French) name, and the Italian name -
anybody know what it's called in Germany? Poland?

Is it any more edible, with a different name?

9. A neighbor of mine once gave me a 5-pound zucchini.
I thanked her, split it half and scooped out the seeds, filled it with a lovely hamburger, onions, and rice mixture, then baked it until it was nice and tender. When it was done, I took the finished product over and gave it back to the neighbor. She never bothered me with oversize zukes again.

12. Burtworm posted about this yesterday too

And I didn't have time to say how thrilled I was to know there was yet one more use for zucchini. It's the one squash that you always end up with too many of, and you can only make so many zucchini casseroles, bread and fried zucchini before you run out of ideas.

But weaponry, now! It'll soon be in all the pawnshops!

Maybe there'll soon be an NZA - National Zucchini Association!

Awesome...

23. Beetles got a lot of the earlier plantings this year in these parts

i waited until the squash borers weren't a threat and planted and no pest problems, but the drought has slowed any production right now, just getting round green summer squash from other plants.

but if you lived nearby and my plants were doing well, I'd be stopping by!

15. A bear walked by my niece as she stood at the door to their cottage. She dropped her stuffed animals
and said "MOM There's a bear". My sister came along and tried to scare it with loud noises and such. It wasn't scared at all. Turns out it is a nuisance bear that will be hunted this fall because it has become dependant on their neighbour's garbage for sustenance. very sad.

17. Where I come from, that's a zucchini
Funny how the French word for it didn't make it into bilingual Canada. Even in Québec, it's called Zucchini.
