In 1946, a mushroom cloud-shaped cake was served at a Washington D.C. military party celebrating the task force that oversaw atomic tests in the Pacific post-World War II. The photo of this garish pastry caused a bizarre international fracas.

2. I kept trying to figure out how the top was made.
Having made a few cakes, I know that it's not exactly structural material....

4. I wondered about that, too.
Maybe it's a kind of meringue that holds together. I can't imagine why the whole thing didn't just fall over.
