False labor day under way...
Some say it is May 1st on international solidarity day. I have heard speeches in other countries about Americans workers who were killed striking for a 40 hour work week. Of course in the land of the "free", we will not hear such stories.

Instead we will be told to rush out with mindless consumerism and buy.

Or if you live in my type of community, you get a Happy labor day for two seconds on the news and they immediately switch to military propaganda news. I thought every day was military propaganda day about our "loved ones". Let me tell you I drive by a major base on my way home and those "loved ones" are speeding at least 30 mph over the speed limit leaving the base and just pissing all over the tax paying drivers by not allowing us to proceed so that can get back to their tax free lifestyle and discounts aplenty. But I drift.

And yes, fuck you Jerry Lewis. Yes I know our system fails to provide for children with all sorts of diseases but did you have to piss all over False Labor Day to get your message across? Why not Thanksgiving?

And why are there not news stories about the status of labor in America? What are the average wages? Where have the jobs and money gone? Every day is like the fourth of July for the Reagan rich. They do not have to answer why they are exporting jobs overseas, why they flood our markets with cheap junk at high prices, nor why they don't even fight in wars they want to see fought. The media are owned by the rich and their master plan is more money for themselves and minimum wage for the rest of us. Many people have to squeeze in houses like cockroaches just to pay the bills.

And why haven't our Democrats thought up a new one? "This place has been a Republican stronghold for decades. Why have there not been decent paying jobs?"

Substitute place with something like the anti union South, etc.

4. The labor movement in the US is content to "keep the peace" while
workers' rights are taken away, and the wage slave becomes the American Ideal...EVERYTHING in your life is dependent on your employer - healthcare, your disability and your retirement. And many are finding that their pensions and benefits are GONE when their employers go out of business or file for bankruptcy.

We need universal healthcare, guaranteed support for the old and disabled and chronically ill.

Class war? They have been killing us for generations - way past time for us to fight back.

5. Rec this post re Universal Health Care -
not only is it the right thing to do, but it would also make our companies more competitive internationally (other countries have guaranteed health care so their companies do not have that expense).

In defense of the labor movement, we need to beef it up here. We need to support our unions, and in fact I hear negative things about them here on DU. That needs to change if we're going to be able to fight back effectively against the owners.

6. end of summer day off.....
Every other holiday in the US has some message tied to it.... Good Friday/Easter: religious, Memorial Day: honor the vets, 4th of July: independence, Thanksgiving: harvest, Christmas: religious, New Years Day: duh. But do you see any stories in the media about Labor, the history of Labor, etc? Do they talk about Labor Day in schools? Its the end of summer day off, nothing more.

There are two days a year I fly my American flag: 4th of July and Labor Day.

It's an important holiday, but only if we make it so.
