How many of the sheriffs in your state can you name right off
Something's been bugging me lately. How many of the county (or parish, or boroughs) sheriffs of your state can you name right away? Here in Iowa we have 99 counties, therefore we've got 99 sheriffs. Out of all that I can only name two sheriffs right off - Ken Runde (Dubuque) and Russ Kettmann (Jackson). Otherwise I don't even know who most of the sheriffs are here in Iowa, let alone outside the state.

I ask because of all the attention that piece of work Arpaio gets on a regular basis. It's why I feel he's not a professional law enforcement officer, but instead a showman. Because everything he does is designed to get him noticed by his fellow conservatives.

2. The only one I can name is my own.
And even that I might not know, except it was a big news thing when he replaced his father as sheriff. His father had to step down after being convicted of rape.

6. A reporter who profiled Arpaio for the New Yorker last year...
...described the press operation at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office:

Arpaio’s media-relations unit is a very busy operation. They were terrific to me, giving me all kinds of time and access. They even helped me get an interview with the sheriff’s single most important political ally, Andrew Thomas, the county attorney, whose press aide at first rejected the idea because, as I overheard it, he considered The New Yorker a “far left” magazine. Arpaio’s press operation seems dedicated to maximizing the sheriff’s media exposure, period.

7. We've got a pretty good sheriff in our county
Frank Cantey, I voted for him and will continue as long as he is running. Good man our sheriff.

Guess what he doesn't make work for his deputies he lets them do deputy work, in other words they deal with the crimes committed not the crimes contemplated.

11. Sheriffs have varying areas of responsibility
Some are the primary law enforcement agency. Some run the jail. Some do little more than serve papers. Some ride Palomino horses in the Rose Bowl Parade.

I *think* (but am not sure) Arpaio is the primary law enforcement agency in his jurisdiction.

12. Can not name the sheriff one county over
Yet I know not to consider Phoenix for living (great friends there cheap as hell real estate) or for vacation. Arpaio is one of the reasons Phoenix is in the gutter financially. Who'd go to a place where the most famous citizen is a nut job lawman with a tent prison?
