Vets charity allegedly funneled donations to Minn. Republicans
Edited on Sat Jul-24-10 11:58 AM by Emit
A veteran’s charity under investigation in five states has deep ties to Minnesota, from substantial contributions to state Republicans like former Sen. Norm Coleman and Rep. Michele Bachmann to its employment of a Minnesota lobbyist and a recently closed St. Paul operation. Officials in other states are calling the United States Navy Veterans Association (USNVA) a fraudulent charity, and its founder and sole organizer, Bobby Thompson, has disappeared in the wake of investigations alleging the group diverted charitable donations intended for military veterans to Republican candidates and political action committees.

USNVA is under investigation in Ohio, Florida, Hawaii, Virginia, Missouri and New Mexico for allegedly defrauding donors, and two weeks ago, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray was granted an emergency court order to shut down USNVA and prevent it from taking any more donations in the state.

“The closer we look at this organization, the more outrageous its conduct appears,” Cordray said at the time. “While very little concrete evidence is available how those funds were spent helping vets or their families, a great deal of information is available about political contributions made by Thompson personally to candidates or through the political action committee he created and to which he was the sole contributor, NAVPAC.”

CHARITABLE VETERANS GROUP FOUNDED BY MAJOR MICHELE BACHMANN CONTRIBUTOR IS UNDER INVESTIGATION NATIONWIDE

Shady nonprofit founder Bobby Thompson gave $10K for a photo of Bachmann-Palin in Minneapolis April 7, was also major Norm Coleman donor.

By Karl Bremer

A tax-exempt Navy veterans group founded by one of Michele Bachmann’s top campaign contributors may be under investigation by the IRS at the request of U.S. Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA). The group is under investigation in at least six states and has been banned from operating in at least three.

Webb has asked the IRS to investigate the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, a national charitable veterans organization founded by Bobby Thompson of Tampa, FL, after reading “alarming reports” that the charity’s directors cannot be located and its multimillion-dollar expenditures cannot be accounted for.The U.S. Navy Veterans Association was founded by Thompson, who donated $10,000 to Rep. Michele Bachmann’s campaign at her Minneapolis event with former halftime governor Sarah Palin April 7. Thompson was only one of six individuals who ponied up the 10 large to have his picture taken with the Tea Party darlings.

2. If you remember this is what they were investigating Hannity for
organization WAS a so called Veterans fund group and then funneled the money to HIMSELF and little or none went to the veterans children for college funds he said it was for. I never did hear what they found out. But then just like the rest of all the republican schemes this one with Hannity will die down. And I bet Bachmann and Coleman and this Thompson and their charity will never be heard from again. REPUBLICANS REPUBLICANS CAN'T TRUST ANY OF THEM.

3. Yes, thank you for the reminder, Bitwit1234
I was wondering just the other day what came of Hannity's charity scheme. You are so right - so many of these republican schemes just die down, with nary a word of follow up.
