A simple statement about where I stand on the subject of making broad brush statements against the police, or whether or not my posting of stories about misconduct should be construed as a form of police hatred on my part.

Hey, if so many of the bad ones EVER stop abusing people in the street or in custody, driving while drunk and drugged, robbing people at gun point, beating up on their own spouses and kids while in a drunken or depressed rage, lying while under oath, raping kids, filing false police reports, shooting unarmed people, harassing law abiding citizens at traffic stops, attacking innocent people because of mistaken identity, selling drugs out of their squad cars, arresting people for videotaping them, withholding evidence during rape investigations, choking people to death, mistaking medical conditions for drug or alcohol abuse, committing hit and runs, committing bank fraud, beating up and shooting people while off duty, committing forgery, beating up innocent gay people and subjecting them to homophobic slurs, beating up ethnic minorities and subjecting them to racist slurs, tweaking while in uniform, tasering the shit out of anything that moves, shooting non aggressive pets, sexually harassing and assaulting "hot babes" while in uniform, stealing shit that doesn't belong to them, inciting police riots during peaceful demonstrations, strip searching school kids in front of their classmates, gun running, shooting sleeping little girls while raiding the wrong house, macing and tasersing school teachers who call the police to stop a prowler, abusing people's civil rights, using overwhelming force on sick and dying people for "resisting" and "non-compliance", assaulting innocent bystanders and subdued detainees with pepper balls, regarding any regular Joe Blow out in the street as a criminal suspect that they won't hesitate to shoot dead at the drop of a hat, torturing people to elicit false confessions, soliciting bribes for political favors, and acting like complete asshole bullies in their interactions with ordinary citizens instead of decent public servants, all when they aren't doing normal, run of the mill police work (like saving kittens and shit), I speak for a lot folks around here when I say that no one would really have a problem with any cops in general.
But, the fact is that all of these problems can be sourced to several issues: recruiting the wrong type of people, bad laws, piss poor training, the "Blue Wall of Silence", and the utter inability of law enforcement leaders to address and fix any of these problems.
Things would a lot better if they did.
Now, if you want to talk about the stupid "War on drugs", the trend of addressing problems of race and poverty with incarceration, the conversion of community police departments into paramilitary organizations, the spying of peaceful citizens by undercover police, speed traps with unnecessarily low speed limits, inadequate community policing for poor communities, and suggest ways that the police can augment the issues of peace and justice in this country instead of propping up the oligarchical super wealthy white power structure, I'm all for it.
But either way, I will not paint all cops (even the good ones) with a broad brush.
That's a promise.
