1. It would be helpful if we knew how they pushed to have
Rather fired. Frankly, I don't remember how they did it.

7. There were plenty of inside stories about newsers stabbing Rather in the back and
it certainly started to appear like a dumpfest when even Katie Couric was caught dumping on him.

11. Somebody saying the documents were not genuine
was enough to impugn his integrity, which in that era, automatically meant being fired.

Hard as that may be to believe today.

For Fox, it's SOP, but for any journalist or organization with any shred of integrity, doctoring documents was simply inexcusable, and was punished.

The final conclusion was that Rather had counterfeit copies of documents that had actually existed, but the truth didn't survive the battering it took.

IMO.

and hence, a culture where lies aren't decried but rewarded, and ethics dismissed and shunned.

9. And Hannity compounded it today, saying that the "exculpatory" part
of the story was that she decided to send him to a white lawyer.

He omitted the entire latter part of how Sherrod helped them, personally, to save their farm.

23. Because he is a talk show host, not a news reporter.
Rather had credibility as a news reporter.

Hannity doesn't have news credibility because he is a talk show host and entertainer.

27. I'm not backing up Hannity....but there is a fine line, which is the root of the Fox News problem.
Their idiot viewers don't understand the difference between their entertainment shows and the actual news. They think Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh are actual news reporters when they're not - they're talk show hosts.

I agree with you, but the fact is that FoxNews has these "opinion" times (isn't there an official sounding name for it) where they have these discussion shows and they really are not news reporters reporting the news.

24. Do you really need to ask why?
In any society or group there are some who are protected, no matter what they do. That's what happens with totalitarian regimes. It is what happens inside bubbles. It is what goes on in focused goal driven companies. If you say all the right things and do as your masters wish, you're protected. Your motives might be as ideologue or useful idiot, but that's a secondary matter. The message is what matters, Hannity delivers the message the powers that be in that particular society want out there. So he is protected.

This is not unusual. I bet you participate in other such societies where the most outrageous speech by some is tolerated, rewarded, and celebrated, even as less outrageous speech, but in opposition, is punished in sometimes very harsh ways.

26. it was complaints from conservatives and whackos directly to CBS
that convinced CBS to fire Rather. It was also a report about the President before an election, different level of pressure from the partisans I assure you.

Best we can hope for is more mainstream media making fun of Fox for being the joke they are.

But don't let my opinion sway you from your goal.
