Glenn Beck may be blind within one year.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100719/bs_yblog_upshot/glenn-beck-says-he-could-go-blind-in-a-year

<<<Beck, about midway through his keynote address Saturday during his American Revival tour, brought the topic of faith down to a personal level. The Fox News host tearfully told the Salt Lake City crowd of 6,000 that he’s recently been diagnosed with macular dystrophy, the Deseret News reported.

Jokes aside, Beck spoke of how his faith is getting him through the ordeal. Beck is Mormon.

"I truly came to a place that is the greatest blessing," Beck said. "Lord, if you need my eyes, they're yours. They were yours the whole time anyway. Thank you for letting me see as long as I have. That's a blessing." Beck got choked up telling the crowd about how much he loves to read — another heartfelt moment.<<

The lights may go out within a year...

But by sheer coincidence, I also found this, from Media Matters in 2006:

http://mediamatters.org/research/200608250004

<<On the August 24 edition of his CNN Headline News program, nationally syndicated radio host Glenn Beck claimed that Braille on walls (used to identify rooms for blind people) "drives me out of my mind." When he made his comment, Beck was discussing the "politically correct world we live in," which, he claimed, will not allow "stereotypes or sensitive questions" to be broached. He explained that "a blind person would have to be feeling all of the walls to find 'kitchen.' " Beck then waved his hands about, presumably to mimic the actions of a frustrated blind person. He then said, "Just to piss them off, I'm going to put in Braille on the coffee pot ... 'Pot is hot.' "<<

Karma is surely a bitch.

I'll hold onto the hope that Karma is a bitch with good aim, and if this is yet another lie from Beck, she's going to hand him a double dose.

Glen Beck may not really be going blind - if you read wiki, he likely has a mild version of the disease, so his prognosis isn't as dim as he says.

71. I wish you well, my Dad had some macular problems too
My Mom keeps saying it wasn't Macular Degeneration, but I don't know what it was. They are talking about macular dystrophy, which is a different disease.

http://www.radio-info.com/news/talk-radios-glenn-beck-is-diagnosed-with-macular-dystrophy
The Premiere-syndicated Beck chose a weekend live appearance in Salt Lake City on his “American Revival Tour” to share the news: “a couple of weeks ago I went to the doctor because I can’t focus my eyes. Actually, I went to Lenscrafters first, and the guy said, ‘Whoa, you might be going blind.’” A later consultation with an eye doctor produced a diagnosis of macular dystrophy. It’s a progressive disease, often hereditary, that can cause a loss of central vision as the cells in the center of the retina (the macula) fill up with a fatty substance. Macular dystrophy is a different disease from macular degeneration, which can also produce loss of central vision. Peripheral vision may be unaffected in both conditions.

It's a random disease that could strike anyone. Karma has nothing to do with it. I'm also sorry to hear he's throwing in the towel on the basis of what god wants. They're his eyes, not god's. That kind of irrationality is the basis of this country's problems. There's a really decent and good woman who went to high school with me who is suffering from MS. Like Beck, she is resigned to "god's will." What sin did she commit to draw Karma's wrath?

27. You're mixing your religion
Karma and the concept of "sin" are two different religions, and I don't mean just two different factions of one faith. You're really on roughly the opposite side of the world.

The Buddha’s reply was:

"All living beings have actions (Karma) as their own, their inheritance, their congenital cause, their kinsman, their refuge. It is Karma that differentiates beings into low and high states."

He then explained the cause of such differences in accordance with the law of cause and effect.

Certainly we are born with hereditary characteristics. At the same time we possess certain innate abilities that science cannot adequately account for. To our parents we are indebted for the gross sperm and ovum that form the nucleus of this so-called being. They remain dormant within each parent until this potential germinal compound is vitalised by the karmic energy needed for the production of the foetus. Karma is therefore the indispensable conceptive cause of this being.

The accumulated karmic tendencies, inherited in the course of previous lives, at times play a far greater role than the hereditary parental cells and genes in the formation of both physical and mental characteristics.

50. "Karma's a bitch"
That clearly implies that Beck's purported condition is some kind of divine judgment for his bad behavior. It isn't. Attributing illness to god's will, Karma, sin, witchcraft or any supernatural force is something that should have ended with germ theory.

I used to be interested in theological matters. I stopped caring when I realized just how utterly pointless the whole thing is.

52. germ theory is the mechanism
Karma is the motivation. It is an attempt to explain why one person gets a disease and another does. And explanation that is something other than "random selection".

111. Sorry to break the news to you, but there IS such a thing as random selection.
Both natural (less-than-certain contagion of some diseases upon exposure, natural disasters etc.) and man-made (lotteries, stray bullets etc.).

And I assure you the moral standing of the targets of such selections play no part in the probabilities.

114. Prove it
To be honest, I agree with you. But as I say, considering the forces they are bringing into play, one would be hard pressed to prove that random selection existed.

Proving a sample is truly random isn't particularly easy, and in reality there are precious few "truly" randomm data sets. Almost all have some hidden or buried collection biases. (If nothing else, the instrumentation itself may have functional limits on the scale). The most one can do is to demonstrate that whatever supposed correlation is being expressed, just doesn't seem to exist. That gets pretty hard to do with the concept of "past lives".

115. Proofs of lack of correlation do exist.
It was applied to prayer, which was proven worthless. (Cue the nyah-nyah-nyah-that-proved-nothing-so-stop-saying-that wailing from the usual suspects.)

The problem with "past lives" is that, unlike prayer or homeopathy, no measurable effects are alleged. I could think up some experiments, though. Like taking two "past lives therapists" and putting them to "analyze" the same group of people, taking care of isolation so as to avoid collusion.

117. Agree on the lack of correlation
One can demonstrate that the supposed correlation doesn't exist. That in and of itself isn't proof of randomness. Our presumption of randomness (or what we call in my business "psuedo random") is mostly an extrapolation from simple experiments where we can control all the variables. (Or at least quantify them). But in the end, one is limited in "real" systems from demonstrating that there aren't biases of selection that are as yet not understood.

118. Here's a thought experiment.
Take a fair amount of money (say, $5000).

Take a coin. Use the following mechanism to avoid coin bias:
- To select between outcome A and outcome B, throw the coin twice.
- Heads-tails, it's outcome A, Tails-heads, it's outcome B.
- Otherwise, repeat the two throws.

Divide the $5000 into $1 chunks.

For each $1, throw the coin as above. According to outcome, put the $1 in pot A or pot B.

Beforehand, pledge to give the contents of pot A to a worthy charity, and the contents of pot B to a convicted child rapist. AND FOLLOW THROUGH.

I assure you the fractions will tend to 50-50 as expected.

119. You might be surprised
You said "tending", and that's the key word.

My sister, being the daughter of a PhD, came up with a simple "science fair" experiment along these lines. Basically she rolled dice... ALOT. Actually, we all did since we all got involved before it was all over. Red die, blue die, roll 'em, write down the results. We literally did THOUSANDS of rolls, and the data was constantly moving around, never really wanting to fall into the predicted categories. The were "approaching" them, but one of the numbers, or one of the die would constantly be more outta whack than the others.

Years later, in college, a professor of mine would write a paper addressing this a bit. It was basically an attempt to identify if samples were "truly" random. It wasn't a proof methodology as much as an error detection methodology. i.e. it didn't prove that data sets WERE random, it tried to detect if they potentially WEREN'T random. But what he developed was a set of guidelines (based upon sample size) for finding REGULAR distributions of data, i.e. apparently highly ordered or repetative. In a "truly" random set, there should be "runs" of numbers in order (10, 20, 30, 40..., or 1,2,1,2,1,2). the length and frequency was the point of the paper. Look for them and if you don't find them, somethings probably wrong. Years later I read that forensic accounts do something similar in which the just take all the digits used in accounting data and do a histogram. There should be a roughly "even" distribution of digits in a large report. If there isn't someone's cooked the books.

In your example, it wouldn't be surprising if there was a deviation by a couple hundred dollars either way. It wouldn't be "common" but it wouldn't be out of the relm of reality either.

And again, you're trying to extrapolate a narrow, limited variable, result to a system with large numbers of variables (potentially infinite) and say that because randomness exists in the limited case, it must exist in the larger case as well. Don't mistake me, I know randomness exists, and I'm not much of a believer in Karma. I merely make the case that proving them wrong is difficult.

120. That's why I said fractions, not absolute difference.
As the amount of dollars grows, the difference in dollars between the two pots tends to get HIGHER, often after a number of flip-flops. The percentages, however, tend inexorably to 50-50. Always.

would draw attention to those who suffer from eye sight issues. You know the way he went after Michael J. Fox for his M.S. The last decade has turned this country into one that acts contrary to those who are differently abled. It leaves many wide open to abusive comments like Beck and Limbo feel comfortable dishing out. We need to train those on the front lines in this country to stop abusing those who are differently abled.

I think it's a play for sympathy. It's been my experience that when people have really medical crises, they don't say things like "God, take my eyes if you want to." It's like saying "I'll take the cancer if it was your will" - even truly religious people can rarely manage that sort of response.

But what I do find ironic is that Beck is notorious for his lack of empathy towards people that he considers adversaries.

Remember the time that he called the wife of rival radio jock on air to tell her a tasteless joke about their then recent miscarriage? When he was hospitalized he did the same thing then and once he recovered he came back just as detestable as he was before.

And now this man is trying to elicit empathy for himself, despite his lack of empathy for others?

Tough shit.

It's a shame that he may go blind, but it's a bigger shame to know that he will still be just as ugly in heart as he is now, if not more, after going through something that has the potential to make him a better person, were he to learn some compassion and humility.

Well, that is if they vote for god's party the Republican Party!

This time next year Beck will still be on the air and still crying about something. This guy is a media whore and having his own show does not satisfy his want for attention.

If I am wrong then Beck gets what he deserves for making fun of people with disabilities and we do not have to see him on TV for much longer...Hopefully.

122. My mom had regular macular degeneration and suffered greatly from it.
I was in an amateur opera production some years ago, when Mom was still alive, and one of the other sopranos in the chorus (who wore reading glasses, BTW) kept asking me "Why don't you get LASIK? blah blah blah" because I INSISTED on wearing my glasses on stage. I told her, "Well, this stage is old, and tiny, I could literally take three steps, fall down the back stairs, or off the stage in the front, and sue your non-profit ass out of existence for damages".

She was shocked. It was the most immature thing I had run into in DECADES. It was like being bullied on the playground. I talked to the director and informed her the people in the chorus at Houston Grand Opera in their production of Mefistofeles with Samuel Ramey, world's most pre-eminent operatic bass, were wearing glasses.

I'm just thankful that I have full color and stereo vision, as near sighted as I am. I got to keep wearing my glasses but they didn't call me back for anymore productions.

That was OK, as the whole place was full of battling egoes, which I wanted nothing to do with. I just wanted to sing and have a good time playing a drunken peasant. This was "The Elixir of Love" which is a delightfully funny opera. I had more fun than I have had in years. We did it in Italian. That was fun too.

I guess this woman who had a problem with my glasses must have been on the Board of Directors to get away with hassling me. I should have told her how thankful I was to have full color vision and stereo and about my poor mother with macular degeneration, that they couldn't really do anything about.

I think it's the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. in the aging population.
