Mickey Mouse has a black eye. Jesse Russell reports:
Mickey Mouse masks worn by Disney hotel workers protesting the House of Mouse in Anaheim, California, home of Disneyland, featured a blemish not normally seen on the happy go lucky anthromorph –a black eye. The black eye, according to the protesters, was given to Mickey by Disney as a two and a half year contract dispute continues to drag on. The most recent protests have been timed to coincide with Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game taking place at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. The main sticking point in contract negotiations is the hotel workers want to keep a union-run health care plan that doesn’t require contributions. Disney wants the workers to be part of the company run health care program which would require contributions. The union estimates that by joining the company run plan family benefits would cost nearly $300 per month creeping up to as high as $500 per month by 2014.
