FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- A Fort Campbell soldier was killed when his patrol encountered an explosive device in Afghanistan, according to the military.

Pfc. David A. Jefferson, 23, of Philadelphia, was an Army combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in February 2009.
