Palin decries 'Dumpster divers' at Calif. campus
Source: AP / MSNBC

TURLOCK, Calif. — Sarah Palin leveled criticism at California's attorney general and others raising questions about her visit to a cash-strapped university, telling supporters that students had better things to do than dive through Dumpsters to find out how much she earns speaking.

The former Alaska governor's headline address Friday night at the 50th anniversary celebration at California State University, Stanislaus has drawn criticism and scrutiny since it was first announced. It also attracted sizable donations for the public school.

Officials have refused to divulge the terms of her contract or her speaking fee, and some details only came to light after students fished part of what appeared to be Palin's contract from a rubbish bin.

"Students who spent their valuable, precious time diving through dumpsters before this event in order to silence someone ... what a wasted resource," she told the crowd dining in the campus cafeteria.

Call me crazy, but the words "Sarah Palin" and "dumpster" kinda go together.

1. The fact that she comments on this means it bothers her
It's all about her...one day her clown act will be over. But she's not acting - she's being herself and that's a very ugly soul right there.

11. But she's not acting - she's being herself
I think she's acting, an not being herself. It's just she sucks at it. You see right through it, as most intelligent people do, so it is invisible to you. I see it because I used to work in film and TV and I recognize acting when I see it. I don't think she really cares about anything she says she cares about... and she's no "soccer mom" either.

15. I disagree. I believe she is as stupid as she appears and she
is not acting. She is a person who has gotten by on her looks alone. I think she has low self esteem and that causes her to be mean spirited and ready to put down everyone who disagrees with her "vision" of America. So far, no one has confronted her to her face with her idiocy and ridiculous assertions.

If she knew how many people were laughing at her while pretending to hang on her every word, she would crumble like a cookie in the hand of a two year old.

Besides, why would anyone actually want to appear so ignorant?

39. Palin was speaking at a public university payed for with
taxpayer dollars. It's not her financial records, it's the payment and other bennies she required to speak there and I believe the public has a right to that information

She's a whiner, "oh poor me, I am such a victim", and she lashes out at anyone who dares criticize or question her, as if she was a Queen instead of an almost half-term Governor.

She wants the limelight, she deserves the scrutiny.

Makes perfect sense to me - they are not going for her financial records but for her fee that a cash strapped university paid her ---when they could be paying for a speaker who really accomplished something great, or for solar research instead.

32. You are really hostile
Against non-traditional students. Nothing like thinking in a box, everyone lives this cookie-cutter life, where you get out of high school, go directly to college, get your 2.5 kids in the suburb, some meaningless career, retire at the appropriate age, and die. Not everyone's life goes that way, and regarding your snarkiness, this is not directly related to intelligence. One of my closest friends is a 75 year old woman that works full time and attends a prestigious university half time. Non-traditional students are much more common in an era when people change careers numerous times. And some of us did not have mommy and daddy sweeping us into college at the age of 18.

35. Agreed...I returned to college at age 40!
And it took years to complete the degree because I was working & had kids and took 1 or 2 courses every semester. So what? It's never to late to get an education. I really was a much better student in later life because I valued the education more and was doing it for me not because my parents expected it of me.

6. Did the "sizable donations" cover her fee?
It's pretty sad that anybody would donate money to a college just because the college had her give a speech there.

The key words were "public school." That makes every expenditure eligible for public scrutiny. The fact that the officials are hiding the truth speaks volumes.

13. What I don’t understand is
If this is a document she didn’t want revealed publicly;
Why would she have brought the contract with her and dispose of it, unshreded, in a campus dumpster?

She probably posted a sign on the side of the dumpster indicating the contract was in it so she could comment on students digging it up and play the victim card.

63. If it's not the case that either is acceptable, it will be soon
Google "foist off" and you get 81,100 results, including various online dictionaries that list it as correct English. "Foist on" returns 46,300 results, again including dictionary entries.

This is not to say that you're wrong, of course. "Foist on" sounds more correct to me, and I've probably been confusing "foist on" with "fob off", but it would appear lots of other folks have been doing the same. Eventually, these things that originate in error become correct usage, as the online dictionary results already seem to acknowledge. Nonetheless, as someone who takes pride in the quality of the writing of my anonymous internet postings, I am filled with shame.

More to the point, though, although I haven't checked, I'm sure there are probably more serious perversions of the English language out on the internet, quite possibly in this very thread, quite possibly in this very sentience.

64. no matter how many people think something is true doesn't make it so...
The base meaning of foist is to force something on someone else, or to perpetrate a fraud on others. By root definition this has to be 'on', otherwise the phrase makes no sense no matter how many people are getting it wrong these days. If it ever passes into English in the way you say (descriptive use rather than prescriptive use), it would have to give up its root meaning and just be a collection of sounds. I suspect people have confused it with 'pass off', meaning to make people believe the fraud successfully. Not at all the same meaning.

22. Sarah shooting the messenger
Palin can't defend the fee she gets for babbling incoherently and reciting talking points. Nor can she justify the perks she demands while on such jaunts. So all she can do is whine about those who uncovered the facts.

Of course, this brings up another great example of right-wing hypocrisy: Privacy isn't important when the NSA wants to spy on all of us but is suddenly a big deal when it affects one of them.

I thought my "HALF BAKED ALASKAN" bumper sticker would go the way of the Pet Rock after the McCain-Palin express crashed and burned. But as long as her yapping is still newsworthy, my bumper sticker is still relevant.
