I'm no petroleum engineer, but read the internal memos about the dozens of shortcuts BP took with this well, and you just KNOW that - like any other form of cheating - it's not the first time they did it, it's only the first time they've been caught.
Here's a little takin'-BP-to-the-woodshed recommendation for you, Mr President:
How about the government immediately shut down all other BP platforms in US waters and make them commence digging relief wells for each one to within __ feet of the main bore, in the very likely event that other wells were dug on the cheap, just as shoddily encased, have inactive batteries in their BOPs and used 6 "centralizers" because the recommended 21 "would take 10 hours to install". Oh, and on all future projects, at least two relief bores to within __ feet of the main hole are mandatory, and are to be drilled concurrently with the main bore.
Bonus: Unlike a mere moratorium, this would actually increase demand for highly paid skilled labor.
Then - move on the other oil companies - any one that mentioned 'walruses' in their Gulf of Mexico safety plan would be a good start.
