And why the hell am I voting for the "coroner"?
or deciding whether to make earthquake retrofits a tax exemptable part of one's housing assessment?

i always vote and always research and i'm not up to the task of evaluating the some 50+ people and multiple measures placed before me on a ballot that just a small percentage of Californians bothered with. the big names i can research and know their approach --but me choosing the coroner? how the hell am i supposed to do a good job doing that? :wtf:

heck, i can't even keep the people on American Idol straight and i'm supposed to decide who's the best coroner based on a couple paragraphs from each one?

sheesh, if i don't have the attention span for this, nobody does.

this kind of stuff is outmoded. no wonder it's not working.

elect people and give them the power of appointment and if they screw up, elect somebody new.

1. I want to see the commercials for the coroner's race
Hi I'm Joe Blow and trust me, I know what dead is. My opponent doesnt know a pulse from a hole in the ground.

3. We have some pretty stiff competition in our local Coroners races.
In the last one the Republican was bragging that he was gonna bury his opponent but it ended in a dead heat.

2. Call the few candidates... ask if any of them will signoff on a BATFE Form 5320.4
Edited on Wed Jun-09-10 03:07 PM by OneTenthofOnePercent
This is commonly called an "ATF Form 4".
Vote for whomever says they WILL signoff on these forms.

10. Corners can sign off on an ATF Form 4
in lieu of the Police chief... many elected officials can sign off on the Form 4 in their jurisdictions.
District Attorneys, Magistrates, County Sheriff, Coroner, etc... The right is not reserved to the police chief alone.

In districts where the Police Chief does not sign these forms (basically being a jerk) having other officials that can sign the forms is a benefit to the people.

4. Should coroner be a patronage job?
Having the coroner elected reduces the chances that some elected official's incompetent cousin gets the job.

9. It should be civil service managed
and appointed.

your point is well taken.

i just don't see how voting avoids the incompetent cousin of the Mayor, "Clovis" scenario.

(see "Simpsons")

11. it doesn't work- and i bring up my county's coroner's race to illustrate:
the longtime county coroner was accused of sexual harassment and he seems like he all but admitted it and may have cleaned up his act. inexcusable to keep him in that position based on some of the things he did i guess.

except, his opponent wasn't a forensic expert, toxicologist or had any training as such. she was short time staffer/intern at the coroner's office when his bad behavior happened.

so those were my choices and i voted for him.

a better system would have instead had the lead of that office coming from within the county and when the bad stuff was done, he would be fired or severely demoted from management and a new director would be hired or appointed or something under civil service rules.

instead we get this crap. :eyes:
