FDA tests lipsticks, finds lead in all

Tests conducted by the FDA last year on 22 red lipsticks found lead, a neurotoxin, in every single lipstick sample studied.

The highest levels were in three well-known and common brands: Cover Girl, Revlon, L’Oreal.

While the FDA says it’s continuing lead research on additional cosmetic brands and colors, it’s reassuring consumers that the lead levels it found in the red lipsticks are very small and not a health threat.

The FDA does not regulate lead in finished cosmetics, only in colors added to the products. None of the products exceeded the 20 parts per million limit on colors, the agency said.

An industry trade group, the Personal Care Products Council, said manufacturers don’t intentionally add lead.

The lead found in Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor Maximum Red was 34 times higher than the lead found in the lowest scoring lipstick, Avon’s Ultra Color Rich Cherry Jubilee. Clearly, the manufacturers are capable of doing better, said the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ Stacy Malkan.

In related news, lead (along with arsenic and cadmium) was also discovered in some protein drinks. Can we ever escape these metals??

Your best bet for cosmetic safety, aside from throwing out your makeup altogether (which I for one am not strong enough to do), is to check the Cosmetics Safety Database. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/
Make sure the potions that make you more beautiful aren't also making you more toxic.

Right now, the FDA doesn't regularly test for lead in finished cosmetics -- only in the colors added to them. To help ensure the safety of your makeup, sign this petition asking the FDA to test finished cosmetics for lead. Ban all lead from these products, because NO lead is the only safe level.

1. "Ban all lead from these products, because NO lead is the only safe level."
Um, if you look close enough, you'll find lead everywhere.

That doesn't mean things are more contaminated with lead than they used to be. It's that the means by which scientists detect and measure lead are getting more and more sensitive.

2. I often cringe when putting on makeup... especially eyeliner
and the random fly by night brands of lip gloss. At some point I will get serious and look into all natural products.

16. I do get "Burts Bees" lip shimmers and wonder
if they are significantly better or just marketed that way?

18. Instead of trying to "look into all natural products", maybe women should just look "all natural"
themselves.

The humongous amount of $$$ spent by women to alter their appearance is shocking.
I'm wanting to read "The Beauty Myth" again - have only skimmed it in the past.

Why do most women feel that they have to alter virtually every aspect of their appearance, whereas guys look okay just the way they are? -- the typical guy gets up, showers, puts on deodorant, brushes teeth, shaves face (not every single bit of his body hair), runs a quick comb through his hair, and he's set - that is his TOTAL "beauty routine". Trims his nails once in a while, and gets the occasional cheap haircut. Quick, easy, inexpensive. Also, he wears comfortable shoes that don't cripple his feet. And he's "allowed" to have gray hair.

Women need to stop buying into the bullshit beauty standard.
