Sarah Palin PLAGIARIZED Memorial Day Message

Yesterday the Palin tweeted the following: "VETERANS,not reporters, give freedom of the press.VETS,not politicians, give freedom to vote.VETS,not campus radicals, give freedom to assemble." She did not mention that she'd stolen it from a 1970 poem.

The remarkably similar poem, by former soldier Charles M. Province, is available here and goes as follows:

<http://iwvpa.net/provincecm/>

IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister

Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter

Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet

Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer

Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer

Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician

Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,

Who serves beneath the flag,

And whose coffin is draped by the flag,

Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Does one have to attribute in tweets? We'd say that if you're a politically active public figure with about 160,000 followers it would probably be the decent thing to do.

She's a proven grifter, LIAR, and ignoramus - so plagiarism is hardly a biggie here. That woman is an idiot!

Her language skills do not reach that level.

2. "campus radicals" - LOL
From the comments section:

I would have thought that the term "campus radicals" was a time-travel give-away that this was 70s material. And Sarah, as we all know, is a material girl.

7. Hate the poem. Hate the thought. It's simply not true.
Our freedoms are won every day, every year, right here in America, by those who fight for them against those who would eliminate them.

13. No, they are PRESERVED.
Nobody "gives" them to us or "wins" them for us now. They were enshrined in the Constitution and its Bill of Rights long ago. What people are doing today--soliders and others--is protecting, preserving and defending those rights. Not "giving" them to us. Not "winning" them for us.

Can't speak for any other vets, but this one deeply resents low lifes like Saracuda using us to push their agenda.

36. 90% of such things I get come from non vets
Edited on Mon May-31-10 06:44 PM by TexasObserver
Sometimes I want to write back and say "I remember when you were about to shit your pants in 1966 because you were terrified of getting drafted and couldn't stay in college!" But I don't. I let it slide, because too much truth can ruin a family relationship. I don't remind them that I volunteered while they sought out medical excuses, National Guard, or other avoidances.

And the vets who do send me with this stuff were NOT gung ho back in the day. They were anything but gung ho while in the military. Guys who hated falling out for flag related activities are now flag freaks.

30. I totally agree. Anyone that is or was in the military that has this mindset are dangerous.
I respect the military for the most part. And I respect those in military that serve for the right reasons. But I will not respect every one of them. Those in the military that argue that they fight for or protecting our freedom are either full of it or need to downsize their ego. They are dangerous to our society.

There is also a difference between those that enlist and those that were drafted back in the old days. On the one hand I give more support to those that were drafted because they didn't have a choice. Some did enlist because there were advantages to it when they knew they would get drafted. Some enlisted because it was either that or go to jail. On the other hand I give some support to those that enlisted when there wasn't a draft. Even that group have those that enlisted for various reasons. Some good and some bad and some had no real choice in the matter.

I would rather give respect to those on an individual basis. I sure as hell wouldn't give Ollie North any respect! Or give credence to anything the jackass has to say. He sure as hell wasn't fighting for our freedom. And he sure as hell isn't a hero.

If they were all such honorable men and women they wouldn't need military tribunals and wouldn't have to worry about putting them in the stockades or court-martialing them.

Back to our freedoms. Those freedoms were won initially not by the military but citizens that decided that enough was enough when they declared independence from Great Britain. And it was citizens not the military that created the Constitution and Bill of Rights. If we didn't have the Constitution and Bill of Rights those in the military wouldn't be kept in check. They would be dictating to the government and the citizens what we could or could not be doing.

The military play an important part in our freedom but so do the citizens and those within the non-military community.

8. The poem is kind of obnoxious. The Constitution enumerates
our rights, but people all express them and defend them in different ways. It's like the poem is saying "you suck, soldiers rule!"

33. LOL, ignoring the Palin Plagerism, that poem is full of shit anyway
The truth is we haven't fought for "Freedom" in a long time. Is Palin saying that if we hadn't fought in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan or Iraq we wouldn't be free? Well ignoring the fact that we aren't really "free" anyway, this is typical righty bullshit.

She should get into acting, because it has to be tough to say these things with a straight face.

35. This is the red meat Zell Miller was throwing at the 2004 RNC
... it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. (APPLAUSE)
MILLER: It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. (APPLAUSE) It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest. (APPLAUSE) It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives that protester the freedom he abuses to burn that flag ...

While I think it entirely appropriate to thank those who have risked life or limb for something beyond themselves, history rather strongly suggests that soldiers are too often used as mere cannon fodder for political careers or for special interests, that the military might of the state is too often used to oppress people, and rights are often won simply by the persistent insistence of ordinary people
