1. Most congested = Worst. Driving skills, or lack thereof, aren't the issue here. nt

4. West VA is VERY hilly with a lot of roads not well maintained. LA just might
have a lot of lousy drivers. But any list like this needs to have Massachusetts and Florida at the top.

10. Strange as this may sound, and from a non-native - WV has the most courteous drivers
Edited on Fri May-28-10 08:20 AM by ThomWV
Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of idiots here, but the nature of the secondary roads demands that drivers sometimes give way to one another in ways not seen elsewhere. It isn't at all uncommon to have to pull off a roadway and stop or to have to back up long distances just to find places where two vehicles might go past each other safely. There is also a use of turn signals and emergency flashers here that I've seen nowhere else, where they are not used to show intention or distress for the vehicle using them but as a waring to other drivers of upcoming accidents or obstacles. Oh, and if you break down, get stuck, or slide off the road - I know, that doesn't register with people from most places - people will stop and get you going again; many people here routinely carry tow chains and jumper cables.

Oh, and for whatever its worth somewhere I was reading about road construction costs and as it turns out of the contigious states WV has by far the highest road building and maintainence costs. Its because of the topography, but in dollars and cents WV's road costs are about twice the national average, and because it is one of if the the poorest state in the nation (apparently coal revnue doesn't count) that means that roads simply do not get built or maintained.

7. Not necessarily. Even in lower populated areas of FL
you are still taking your life into your hands when you drive around here. The worst culprits? Soccer moms in an SUV turning the corner while on their cell phone with their BFF's.

The other day on the way to the airport (45-minute drive) I had to call 911 TWICE about drivers cutting me off and swerving continuously all over the fucking road and median. I'm not one to normally do that but these clowns were gonna kill somebody!

What a joke. We have HORRIBLE drivers here. Really really bad.

6. I saw data years ago showing Boston area drivers
had the highest per-capita number of accidents.

This dilutes them by adding in the whole rest of the state. I'd love to see city-by-city data on accidents....

8. In Kansas every time you renew
your license you have to take the written test again. They mail out the test and a copy of the test booklet. I usually fill out the test while I'm standing in line at the MVD. If I'm not sure of an answer I look it up. I love it that every five years I'd get a little refresher on the rules of the road.

And with all due respect to Proud1B, Kansas drivers are much better than most locals think. I lived there for 18 years, and I was constantly surprised at how people would complain about local drivers. I've lived in a number of different states, visited or driven through many more, and everywhere people complain that they have the worst drivers.

A friend in the Pittsburgh area was complaining bitterly about local drivers, this as we were driving somewhere, and I could not convince him that the drivers there were really no worse than anywhere else.

Oh, and Proud2B, as you know I'm in Santa Fe now, and if you can believe it, people here run yellow and red lights even more egregiously back where you are. Hard to imagine, I know, but it's true.

11. Agree strongly with #'s 1 and 2
However, when you get about an hour out of NYC, things get 'normal' again.

After driving here for three years, whenever I go back to the Pacific Northwest, it's like being on one of the kiddie rides at Playland!

13. When I lived in Westchester, I'd drive into the city from time to time.....
...... (I took Metro-North most of the time), and found NYC drivers to be generally bad, but I always adjusted pretty well - except for the kamikaze cabbies.

14. I've driven on the highways and streets in
NY, NJ, PA, VA, MD, WV, RI, MA, CT & NH and the drivers in CT and MA are by far the worse, most inept, dumb asses I've encountered so far in 22 years of driving. I find NY & NJ drivers to be, in general, polite and skilled. Crossing the state line back into CT is like entering an asylum.

It is one of the major reasons I refuse to own a small car or drive anything that doesn't have at least a V-6. There is nothing quite like the feeling of about to be run over by some half wit on their cell phone, pressing down on the gas pedal to get out of the way and have the car do nothing except make strange noises from under the hood.

15. This is really fucking scary because I aced the test.
Most of the questions I didn't even have read all the way through before the answer was immediately obvious.

If you need me I'll be in the left lane going 85 to stay out of the way of the rest of the dumb motherfuckers out there.

16. I call bullshit, New Yorkers (city drivers) are the best in the world
anyone who can drive in that city the way they do deserves a freaking crown.

17. interesting
here is a list of states with the highest insurance rates:

District of Colombia
Iowa
Delaware
Rhode Island
Pennsylvania
Lousiana
Maryland
Nevada
Missouri
Connecticut
Florida
Kentucky
West Virginia
Arkansas
Texas
Mississippi
Oklahoma
Washington
Utah
Arizona

so i kind of begs the question: does not doing well on a test make you a bad driver?

19. I'm in NJ, worst drivers by plate I *encounter* are NY, NC, and NJ, most PA are good drivers.
The test is about what you should do and what the traffic codes are not what you encounter and how people actually drive, I got 90%.
