In the wake of the killing of the gulf, why aren't we seeing the biggest push for alternative
Edited on Sun May-23-10 02:08 PM by lonestarnot
the world has ever known? I see China in Arizona, and Germany in New Mexico, but not hearing anything about American companies making headway in solar and wind development. I guess we will work past this stage of zombiism.

2. everyone's sick of hearing about it and nothing happening
We keep talking about alternatives and nothing ever gets done. We get Ethanol going and then bread costs more and people are talking about food shortages and no one's happy with that. Hydrogen has been "10 years away" for the last 20 years. Wind and solar seem limited - they can't fill up your gas tank - and no one wants a wind farm in their back yard etc etc. I think people don't bother talking about it because nothing's going to happen anyway.

5. Yeah, have you ever seen anyone
with a windmill on their car making it go? I realize it can be used for charging batteries of hybrid cars BUT, T Boone Pickens is a huge proponent of using natural gas in place of oil and using wind in place of natural gas and even he says only 20% of our electrical energy needs can be met by wind.

9. fine, attack the messenger
but the larger point of my original post is that nothing ever seems to happen with alternative energy or critics come out of the woodwork to attack anything that does happen.

4. I think we will see a bigger push
in the aftermath once this gusher is stopped, but I'm not kidding myself.. both parties are owned by big oil..

10. And I wondered why tax payer dollars were not put to use implementing production of products in U.S.
in every state, putting people to work on the solution. So you blame leadership, others blame oil clutches. I do not see blame as the solution, but part of it. Guilty parties should be kicked to the curb as an aside to what we sit helplessly witnessing in the gulf. Green energy should top the list, even above immigration reform IMO, and I am contending with Arizona. :puke:

14. What do you think happened with the stimulus bill?
A lot of the jobs in the recovery are doing energy efficiency and clean energy projects, and there were measures to keep more of those jobs in the US. A lot more needs to be done but it's dishonest to ignore the good that was done because of Obama's leadership.

11. I would guess because too many people today let the media do their thinking for them
And today's media = the corporation.

12. Because we keep subsidizing the coal industry.
There's no room in the market for wind and solar unless we cut the coal subsidies and start shutting down old plants.

15. Part of it might be the political timing
Other than a financial regulatory bill, the only thing left on Congress' agenda is getting re-elected. It might not help that election if a congresscritter called for a wind farm in somebody's back yard.

I look for the President to address this topic in his State of the Union address as a priority for the next Congress. By that time, we'll have stopped the BP spill, and will have made some progress in cleaning it up. Also, the President will know the composition of the Congress that sits before him, and will be able to figure out pretty much what he can accomplish with them.

16. "Obama Says Clean-Energy Technology Spurs Job Growth"
Edited on Sun May-23-10 03:35 PM by Radical Activist
We're already seeing the largest push this country has seen thanks to the stimulus bill. You have to look beyond the negative stories about Obama.

17. In the wake of XXXXX, why aren't we seeing the biggest push for alternative . . .
Been almost forty years since the first big oil shocks of the early 1970s.

Countless bad things have happened due to our reliance on antiquated forms of energy.

What will it take?

I'll have one beer and then I'll quit.

Yeah, right.
