Brown pelican dies in Florida - first oiled bird treated by Florida officials

DESTIN, Fla. -- A brown pelican with oil-covered feathers rescued by Panhandle wildlife officials has died.

The Emerald Coast wildlife refuge learned Friday that the adult bird died Thursday, a day after it was rescued from beneath a Destin-area bridge.

Refuge director Amanda Wilkerson says the pelican was the first oiled bird treated by the Florida officials since the BP offshore blowout.

She says a necropsy will be done to test whether oil on the pelican was from the BP site and how exactly the bird died.
