Wishes granted
Ninth-graders raise funds for dreams

Rosa Scott students got their wish, plus a little more.

Through a variety of fundraisers and straight out donations, the school raised $5,000, enough to pay for a shopping spree for a 13-year-old Jackson boy with enough to contribute to the Hawaiian dream of a Madison girl through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

On Friday, the school met Monquez McInnis and serenaded him through a school talent show, one of their fundraising events, before a flock of pom-pom-waving girls escorted him to the white stretch limo that was taking him shopping.

"Whatever is left over, a little girl in Madison waiting to go to Hawaii will get. You granted a wish-and-a-half," Make-A-Wish director Paul Jones told the cheering crowd of students packed in the Rosa Scott gym.

Monquez, who has acute myelocytic leukemia, spent most of the day at Rosa meeting students and occasionally being serenaded by a few of the freshmen girls. Signs proclaimed "Monquez is the Bomb" and "The Jaguars love Monquez." A bulletin board was filled with small stars with the names of students who donated to Make-A-Wish.

One of the donors listed on the board was freshman Lane Myers, who can identify with Monquez. In 2005, Myers had his own Make-A-Wish assembly at Madison Central when the students presented him with the money to grant his wish of meeting Dale Earnhardt Jr.
