Who killed Desoto? Sacramento woman distraught over dog put down at SPCA, agency explains

SACRAMENTO, CA - Ginger Briggs couldn't help but smile when she remembered her dog Desoto. She had numerous pictures of the Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that had been with her family for 14 years.
...

Briggs said she was renting a home in Natomas when she learned her family would have to move because the owner had lost the house to foreclosure.
...

"This was only supposed to be temporary until we could find a place where Desoto could be with us," Briggs said. "I tried to kennel him, but his shots weren't up to date. I was told he could be immunized, but it would be four days before they could take him."

Finally, her oldest son agreed to take the dog to his apartment in San Francisco. Briggs just needed to find a place to keep the dog overnight until her son could pick up the animal.

That's when Briggs said she turned to the Sacramento SPCA.

"The man there said if you bring your dog here, you do have to surrender him and (whether he stays) is at the discretion of the facility. He said a vet would assess him to determine his age, health, temperament and his adoptability," Briggs said.

According to Briggs, she said she told the SPCA worker her dog wouldn't be there more then two days. "I said, please know, I'm coming back to get him," Briggs said.

The next day, Briggs said she called the SPCA to make arrangements to pick up her dog -- and got a heartbreaking shock.

"They informed me he had been euthanized," Briggs said. "He wasn't a stray. He wasn't found on the street. He was our pet, our family. To have no choice in the matter really, really hurt."

2. I would NEVER
leave a dog at a 'kill' shelter "temporarily"!

You are gambling with the life of the animal.

3. The SPCA isn't supposed to be a "kill" shelter
but I would never trust them either. Another DUer was forced to leave her two cats at an SPCA when her mother died and she was evicted from the apartment that she shared with her. When she went back to pick them up they, too, had been killed.

6. no-kill shelter
why didn't she try to find one? If there is one where I live, there must be one somewhere in or near Sacramento I'd think.

Sad in any event, very sad. :( :( :(
