Decline-to-state voters overtaking Republicans in California

If trends continue, the number of “decline-to-state” voters in California will be nearly the same as the number of people registered as Republicans within eight years.

There are now 3,403,373 residents who have declined to state any party preference, or 20.14 percent of the total number of registered voters, says Secretary of State Debra Bowen in a report released Friday.

There are 5,202,142 registered Republicans, 30.79 of all registered voters. But that’s down 180,565 in four years while the decline-to-state number is up 557,176 in the same time period, Ms. Bowen says.

In contrast, as of April 9, there were 7,530,799 Californians registered as Democrats, or 44.57 of the electorate. That’s up from 6,646,082 or 43.68 percent four years ago.
