Cardinal Mahony Condemns Arizona's Immigration Law
LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The head of the nation's largest archdiocese says a proposed Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigrants encourages "German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques."

Cardinal Roger Mahony, who heads the Los Angeles archdiocese, made the comments in his blog Sunday, a day before the Arizona Legislature passed the bill.

If it's signed by Gov. Jan Brewer, the bill would require police to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.

Mahony, who serves a huge Hispanic immigrant population, says he can't imagine people turning in others who look foreign or because they might lack papers.

1. So now we're back to "liking" the Catholic Church?

I think I need a score card to keep up?

6. As in many large organizations...
...there's good and bad.

There is a long history of Catholic social justice work, helping the poor and the like. Now there is also a long history of bad acts - the Inquisition comes to mind just for starters.

I don't like the Catholic Church as an organization, overall, because even the good they do is tainted by the corruption of the church as a whole. But I will never hesitate to support anyone who speaks on behalf of social justice, certainly not in this case when Arizona really is instituting police state tactics.

5. Six Catholics on the Supreme Court. Ain't gonna happen.
Anti-abortion people in this country should figure that out.

8. The SC could change its position (i.e. revisit Roe v. Wade) and decide states can pass bans

4. Hence the church's problem of late.
It has to look out for a lot of the immigrant population while the bishops support their tormentors.
