Sarah Palin's show is a new low for Discovery...
Last night on The Young Turks we broke the story of reaction to Sarah Palin's new show inside Discovery. We have an inside source at Discovery Communications and we've been leaked information on Sarah Palin's show for Discovery's TLC network.

Last week Discovery had its annual sales conference for ad buyers for all of its 13 networks. The presentation showcases all of their new shows across the different networks. That night the presentation was on Sarah Palin's Alaska.

Our source says "the whole thing comical." Apparently the ad buyers were not impressed. This Discovery insider said, "When the promo was over, people (employees and buyers) were rolling their eyes, snickering, and even laughing. People were laughing and it's not even a comedy. No one took it seriously."

23. That's what I heard here at DU quite some time back . . .
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 08:36 AM by defendandprotect
and I've been contributing that info since then ....

Did a fast check and can't find anything on it right now --

others seem to have more info.

Back later --

But, obviously, there has been a break and a great change in Discovery and what

it presents. The first break was AFTER the final parts of the MWKK series --

getting into the LBJ end of it, etal. Carter and Ford evidently activated on that

one and got the programs allegedly not only pulled but destroyed. They were never

shown again on Discovery -- BUT YOUTUBE DOES HAVE THEM. Presumably because people

recorded them at the time.

The final break that I'm aware of came with their coverage of the 1992 JFK Classified

Records Act -- Former Gov. John Tunnheim headed up that panel.

Sometime when they were calling themselves the "network for the new millennia," they

ran the documentary which indicated that the Tunnheim Panel had concluded that:

"OSWALD WAS EMPLOYED BY THE CIA WORKING ON HIGH LEVEL ASSIGNMENTS AND PROBABLY

ALSO FOR THE FBI."

That statement by Tunnheim was shown at least twice -- and as he spoke the words, the

text appeared below.

Later as I tried to check the information when the progam disappeared, I discovered that

Tunnheim had given his report to Congress around the time that the GOP/Devil with a blue

dress on was trying to impeach Clinton. Seems some part of the report was kept secret?

Anyway, after the program had been airing for a time -- it disappeared. A few months

later, a very poorly made program trying to counter that information played two or three

times in a short period of time and then also disappeared.

Notice that some here are saying that Clear Channel is suffering bad times?

I think they've had some ownership in Fox, haven't they?

I'll try to check further later --

7. wiki shows discovery channel is owned by discovery communications.

so unless clear channel owns that, then I would say CC doesn't own them.

11. It's Liberty Communications...Cable Mogul John Malone...
Cheap Channel got out of TV years ago...they're barely keeping their radio empire afloat...Discovery Communications own the Discovery Channel (as well as TLC, Animal Planet and Food Channel) and Discovery Communications is controlled by Discovery Investment Corporation (they bury these things good these days):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Holding_Company

The big money is John Malone...bigwig in Comcast and Sirius/XM...also interested in taking over NBC.

13. you are right that Malone is a major investor. Wrong about most everything else
I don't know what "Discovery Investment Corporation" is, but it has nothing to do with Discovery Communications or the Discovery Channel Networks. Malone is one of top shareholders in Discovery and also controls Liberty Media and sits on the Discovery Channel board. But Liberty does not directly own any shares of Discovery. Malone years ago was the largest shareholder in a cable company called TCI which sold out to ATT which then sold out to Comcast. I don't believe Malone has any remaining stake in Comcast. In fact, Liberty owns DirecTV, Comcast's largest competitor. Liberty is the largest shareholder of sm/sirius although, somewhat surprisingly, earlier this year, DirecTV dropped xm/sirius from it satellite service. And I've never seen anything suggesting Malone has an interest in taking over NBC.

Here is Discovery's 10-K filing:http://ir.corporate.discovery.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=222412&p=irol-SECText&TEXT=aHR0cDovL2NjYm4uMTBrd2l6YXJkLmNvbS94bWwvZmlsaW5nLnhtbD9yZXBvPXRlbmsmaXBhZ2U9Njc3NzY4OCZhdHRhY2g9T04mc1hCUkw9MQ%3d%3d

Full disclosure: a close family member worked for Discovery for a number of years, although no longer.

21. Thank You For The Insight...
I got confused with Malone's Liberty operation. I also confused Malone's previous role with TCI with that of Comcast (who wants to buy NBC)...all the moving around purposely gets messy...and I thank you for the corrections.

The poster mentioned Clear Channel as an investor/operator of Discovery, which it isn't. IMO, the Mooselini show as sold more on the power of Mark Burnette than anything political...he's produced a couple of hits for the network and they are going on his track record, not hers.

24. See my post above . . .
I had heard from someone here at DU that Clear Channel had bought Discovery

and I've been repeating that --

Obviously there has been a change -- but can't find anything on a Clear Channel connection

to it.

I'll continue to check later --

4. When it tanks maybe she can fulfill her contract as a stand-in for Buster.
That way Discovery can get their money's worth and she can get a job worthy of her intellect.

5. Well, TLC is a pretty sleazy part of the Discovery network
They air stuff like "Toddlers & Tiaras" (the world of child beauty pageants), that show with the Duggers and I don't know how many shows about "Little People." It's kind of Trash TV, and probably one of the places where Sarah would fit on the dial.

25. TLC is another example of greed overtaking what might not be
a bad original idea --

I've certainly learned something from their "Little People" series --

The Jon & Kate series was obviously pure exploitation of the family --

the whole family.

10. Seeing as the show hasn't gone into production, bit soon to say its gonna tank.
It has a lot of potential to be successful. Almost 60 million people voted for this woman. And Alaska is beautiful country, so people will watch if it's shot well and producers stick to the travelogue premise.
