Getting Seriously Sad: McCain 9.8:'I Never Considered Myself A Maverick'

For more than a decade, famed 'Straight Talk Express' rider John McCain has had 'maverick' as his and his supporters' moniker of choice. And friends and foes alike have followed suit to such a degree that it can almost sound like an official title ('maverick Sen. John McCain'). But running in a surprisingly contested Republican primary against a former member of Congress who says McCain is too moderate may be taking its toll.

Sen. McCain (R-AZ) now tells Newsweek that he was never a maverick.(http://www.newsweek.com/id/235883)

"I never considered myself a maverick," McCain said. "I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities."

But there are those who remember the 2008 presidential campaign, when McCain, his running mate Sarah Palin and his entire campaign constantly referred to him as a "maverick."

Just one example: An ad from August 2008 declaring the senator the "original maverick."

from Newsweek
"Maverick" is a mantle McCain no longer claims; in fact, he now denies he ever was one. "I never considered myself a maverick," he told me. "I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities." Yet here was Palin, urging her fans four times in 15 minutes to send McCain the Maverick back to Washington.

2. John McCain was the "original maverick"? Wow! How old is he?
Edited on Mon Apr-05-10 12:43 PM by ck4829
Here, I thought my great-great-great-great uncle, Samuel Maverick, who refused to brand his cows because he thought it was cruel (Or because he wanted to get other unbranded cattle and claim them as his own) and thus got his name coined as "Maverick" was the original maverick. I didn't know McCain had him beat!

8. Who is the pale sad hack up there? Maverick is his name.
Baggin' the tea just who knows where,
Palin his companion,
Posin' is his game.
Smooth as a major donor's tongue.
Maverick is the name.
Wild as the view in Fountain Hills,
Blowin' Big Bill Kristol,
Melting into lame.

Wasilla, it waits for thee,
Fare thee well, Sarah P.
Cash is the lady that he loves the best.
Sedona to the Beltway
Marryin' beer biz queens
Maverick is a legend of the west.

Vultures circle, they can see,
J.D. Hayworth, bags of tea.
Cash is the lady that he loves the best.
Keating to J.P. Morgan,
Handin' out refried dreams.
Maverick is a legend of the west.
Maverick is a legend of the west.

11. I'm a longtime Zonie and he's been Senator since my very first vote--he's always
trotted out that gawdforesaken name--except for this primary election, when he is desperaterately trying to appeal to the TeaBaggers that now make up the RRR base.

I'm torn between wanting Hayworth, loathesome as he is, to kick McCain's ass (but also afraid Hayworth would still beat our Senate candidate).

I LOATHE, LOATHE, LOATHE John McCain.

13. McCain : The Education of an American Maverick, and the Heroes Who Inspired Him
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/political-media/happy-hour-roundup-193/

John McCain, who has now claimed to much ridicule that he never considered himself a maverick, wrote an autobiography called…

Worth the Fighting For: The Education of an American Maverick, and the Heroes Who Inspired Him

The title of chapter 11: “Maverick.”

Worth the Fighting For: The Education of an American Maverick, and the Heroes Who Inspired Him (Paperback)

* And he called himself a maverick during his 2008 convention speech.
