Tax firearm ownership similar to a property tax.
Gun crimes are an enormous cost to America.

$500 per gun tax, levied annually. Exemption for individuals who's income is under $30,000 per year.

Tax ammunition as well, per bullet/round.

3. Sure. Also tax knives, baseball bats, rocks, pointy-toed boots, fists, bricks, 2x4s...
steel chain, chainsaws, sawzalls, nailguns, and anything Jackie Chan has ever used in a fight scene.

7. Nah. But they should treat gun owners the same way car owners are treated.
Edited on Sat Apr-03-10 12:19 PM by onehandle
Photo licences, gun registration-inspections-tracking, gun insurance.

If they're 'responsible owners' they should be happy to comply.

And they would be required to comply (for those with the 'cars on private property' canard).

11. Of course, in most states none of that is required to own a car on private property.

On public streets, its a different story.

19. Great idea
license and registration of any gun taken off private property. I'll bet most people would go with that.

22. Yeah, I've heard that one.
If what I proposed was instituted, you can assume that there would be no exceptions.

Even the rusted out Trans-Am in the backyard and its owner would be subject to the law.

10. How about a tax on union membership?
Union jobs pay more than non-unionized jobs, so they could afford it. And unions are an enormous cost to taxpayers, since we have to pay them more than non-unionized workers.

Even in their weakened state, unions continue to benefit us in countless ways.

pay taxes anyway.

Next idea for getting around that pesky ol' constitution?

15. How would they know who to tax without registering every gun owner?
The notion of taxing ammo is a good one, as it doesnt require personal information, so that shouldnt be considered unconstitutional.

And if that upsets people, then I hope they would support elimination of taxes on tobacco, as its the same issue, one of a threat to the health of others.

Right?

21. Then you like this part too?
Article 1 - The Legislative Branch
Section 8 - Powers of Congress

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

The Constitution is getting more like scriptures everyday. Pick and choose what you like the best.

26. Per capita guns are not an enourmous cost at all, nowhere close
How many millions upon millions of guns are there vs actual harm done by guns (well, guns cannot harm people, people can though - but always easier to blame something else then to face the real problems that are the root of violence/theft).

Typical dem some would say - tax the air you breathe because without it there wouldn't be people hurting others and air is a vital resource. It is no wonder our party has a stereotype of being anti-guns and pro tax everything in existence.

27. Uh, no.
The property tax I pay on my car is 7% of 33% of its blue book value. Similar setup for real estate property tax.

The per-gun tax you cite is 100% of their value, each year, for the 2 guns we own. Not a chance in hell.

I would be fine with a license/registration setup like vehicle licensing that another poster mentioned...even though our guns have left our property all of twice in the last seven years, for target shooting on a family member's rural property.
