Do you use 'ignore' ?
I've yet to do it. Keep telling myself that I need to hear diverse opinions but there are a few who seem to derail many threads. I dont even know how to put someone on ignore but just don't know how much longer I can take it..Its not even 7 AM and I'm upset from reading DU. Not a new thing but for many years, this place was a safe haven for me...now not so much.

Are those of you who use ignore happier without the bs? I just can't believe that we've changed that much for some of these opinions to be legitimate.

1. I do. I find it makes DU a more enjoyable place.
Mostly I use it for people who are abusive and/or bullying or just plain mean and snarky. I wouldn't stick around to talk to someone like that in real life, so why bother with it here?

I want to see what passes for dialogue on DU, and I can't alert on troll droppings if I don't see them. I use the 'buddy list' quite frequently, however, to add trolls I encounter on a daily basis. Occasionally, I check my 'buddy list' to see who's been served pizza. It's been a very good system so far. There are currently three remaining on my list, but I see they've all been inactive for awhile.

I add people I'm suspicious of to my buddy list. That way, once a month or so I can check on them and see who's been TSd.

I have been very accurate in spotting trolls.

Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 09:49 AM by seabeyond
do.

cause i have a couple posters that seem to zero in on threads i am on. particular types of threads. today i have been on 15 different threads. i dont see them on any of those. but one thread, that is the same issue thread as always, they show up. there nipping on the heel. i have been wondering of late if someone can like, ... follow you on du if they chose.

just curious cause you bring up buddy list and i was wondering the other day if that is how they do it.

63. It's at 'My DU'
The 'Buddy List' icon is on the 2nd row, far left. It's where people show up when you add them to your list, which is accomplished by clicking on the icon with a green 'plus' sign to the right of a person's username in a thread - any thread. It's just a convenient shortcut to keep up with people you want to keep up with for any reason. People can be deleted from the list at any time by clicking on the icon with a red 'minus' sign.

75. Merely appearing on someone's 'Buddy List'
doesn't automatically keep track of where a person has been posting; it merely provides shortcuts to their profile and to send them a PM, along with any additional contact info they've decided to make public. Locating the actual threads in which a person has posted takes a bit more effort than merely adding them to your 'Buddy List.'

52. a point is the narrowest point on a end or tip
there is a point on a needle, there is a point on a dunce cap (discipline device in old American schools)a pointer dog displays the location of the prey by assuming a position which identifies the exact spot. To use a finger or digit to display the direction in which to look. I have been married 26 years without ignore (mental functional override) we wouldn't have lasted 5 years.

My point is that I have no point, the option is an OPTION to be used as the operator sees fit. Its neither all bad nor all good.
The point is that if you want the function it is there, if you don't understand why anyone would ever use it, don't use it.

With all thats wrong with this world we should be thankful for any and all options at our disposal, as choice is becoming ever more limited.

Thats all' over and out.

111. Some people are so passionate about some things that controlling their behavior is a challenge
If you're going to be tempted to post personal attacks (which violate the rules) against somebody who disagrees with you on a subject you are very passionate about then a good way to deal with that temptation is to put them on ignore.

11. Yes and no
I don't put instigators and rude posters on ignore, because I have this "thing" about wanting to know what everyone's saying on all sides of an issue.

But I do put some people I like on ignore if they spam teh Lounge with dozens of threads at a time, one for each song they like. I just do it so I can see a wider variety of threads, not because I don't like the person or anything.

"Well, I see IGNORED is busy on this thread" should be prohibited as calling out other posters, in my view. Either ignore the poster or stop talking about them.

Frankly, when someone talks about who they have on ignore, they're violating the spirit of the rule allowing Ignore here. But some need that drama in the daily life, so they have to let others know they're ignoring someone.

I can deal with alternative opinions but if someone's posts always look like they're passing them through babelfish 3 or 4 times or maybe writes everything in semi-poetic riddles, off to iggyland with them. I got tired of wasting my time starting to read their posts and, after struggling through the first couple 'sentences,' realizing 'Oh, it's that knucklehead again.'

43. There are some people who
Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 09:43 AM by caty
get up on the wrong side of the bed every single day. And they like to stir up trouble where ever they can. I ran into one of these people several years ago on this forum, and I put him on "ignore" and never gave him another thought. No matter what anyone posted, he insulted the poster for their opinion. When you see someone talk against what someone said, and remember that person saying the same things in an earlier post, you know that they are just here to cause trouble. I don't have much time to spend here, and I don't want to waste it reading things that someone posted just to rile people up. A true difference of opinion is great, but a fake difference of opinion is a waste of my time.

I don't think that anyone would take putting someone on ignore lightly. If they start thinking that they should, there is probably a damn good reason to even get them to that point. We all recognize trends in how some members think. It doesn't take long to realize that a member is just here to cause trouble while they sit at their computers laughing about the turmoil they are causing.

80. I use ignore
Most of the people on my list I just have set so they can't send me messages but their posts are still visible. My time's worth too much to me to spend it having private discussions with them. They may as well not waste their time composing and sending me their deep thoughts. I'm just not that into them.

A very small group are just such consistent wastes of space that I have their forum posts disappeared as well. I don't feel obligated to read opinions that are so predictably devoid of critical thinking, in the interest of "hearing diverse opinions." We all filter the opinions we read in some way. If we didn't use some form of filtering, we'd be spending equal amounts of time on FR, listening to Glenn Beck, or attending Westboro Baptist Church. I'm fine with acknowledging some folks' thoughts aren't of interest to me.

And one member, every single time he posts, it's to grovel for money for DU. If I want to donate, I will. I don't like the constant nagging and single-minded nature of his posts, so I have him on total ignore.

Edited on Fri Apr-02-10 10:58 AM by Cleita
After a while you get to spot them, so I don't want to waste any more time with them beyond one or two posts if that many. I also use the hide-a-thread function for silly or disturbing posts that I know I'm not going to look at or reply to. So I'd just as soon they aren't visible on my computer. Those two functions sift out the crap and let the thoughtful and informative posts come through. Every few months I update my ignore list and find many of them have been tomb stoned. That doesn't mean diverse opinions will be blocked just the worthless ones. Amazing. I see that "ignore" has inserted itself in many replies on this thread.

84. I've used it temporarily on 3 posters
(two of whom are tombstoned - and the other is on lots of other ignored lists, based on comments by several other posters along the lines of "I see Ignored is at it again").

There are times when I get overly annoyed when someone gets personally insulting in a field in which I have consideral expertise (not substantive discussion - disagreement on substantive matters is part of the game, but personal insults sometimes get under my skin). In those cases, I've used ignore temporarily (a few days - for one poster several few-day-exiles) as a reminder to not say something stupid that might get me in trouble.

88. Sometimes
I clear the list periodically.

Usually it's not disagreement with the opinions but the posting style or a predictable nature to the poster's posts that makes them no longer of interest.

Often I just ignore without putting on ignore - just overlook those posts and look for others.

100. Very rarely...
I have never had more than two people on my iggy list at any one time, and at the moment only one.

I don't use it because I disagree with someone, or even find their views on an issue obnoxious, or because they've flamed me or been rude to me on a thread.

There's only one thing that I use it for: 'baiting'. If someone persistently tries to taunt me, either as an individual, or (in the cases where it's happened) as a member of a forum with whose outlook they disagree, then I feel that I don't need the baiting, and will just use the iggy function.

103. Being an adult, if I want to ignore somebody I'll do it myself.
Seems to me that the whole ignore feature was developed because whiny little dicks couldn't handle other people's opinions, and they kept complaining to the mods about these other opinions, and the mods finally said fuck it, and gave them the ignore option.

116. Occasionally but rarely. I use ignore for two possible reasons:
1. Someone gets increasingly nasty and hostile to me in a debate. Especially when it's over something trivial.

2. Someone annoys me so much that I may lack the willpower to not initiate a rude comment to them.

Every couple of months, I clean the ignore list and start fresh.

137. Seven of my honorees are in this very thread. They have to be rather vile to get there...
Usually there's an uptick in Iggy Prize bestowal when President Obama does something that either has both an upside and a downside or is not what a specific group is satisfied with.

The shrieks of those whose backs have been stabbed are painful to my delicate shell-like ears, and I must avert my eyes and usher them to a special insulated room.

Seriously, and not at all sarcastically, I can handle disagreement, and I can tolerate even accusations of betrayal (by, for instance, Pelosi or Obama) for quite some time. Discussion is great. Vigorous discussion is fine. Bullshit I can ignore by moving on -- I don't need to click a special button for that, we all have our good days and bad days.

But there's a tipping point in a pattern of consistent long-term sniping or sky-is-falling wailing... and it usually comes about the time I hit the Alert button, and when I come back I find the resident Mod has agreed with me for at least that one occasion.

I appreciate the Ignore feature.

Hekate
