Bragg Rape Suspect to Appear in Court

Spc. Aaron Pernell, a Fort Bragg Soldier accused of raping and sexually assaulting women in two counties, is scheduled to appear in Cumberland District Court this afternoon.

It is a first appearance hearing for Pernell, who is charged in Fayetteville and Hoke County.

Pernell, 22, has been charged by the military with sexually assaulting a woman and breaking into two homes on post in late 2009. He initially was considered by Fayetteville police as a "person of interest" in seven rapes and assaults reported in the city limits since June.

Also Friday, Fayetteville police said they were filing the additional charges against Pernell for three attacks reported in the city in 2008. He is charged with three counts of first-degree burglary, two counts each of first-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping, attempted second-degree rape and assault on a female, and one count each of first-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree rape.

In Hoke County, where lawmen say they've linked Pernell to three attacks in 2009, investigators charged him with three counts each of first-degree burglary and attempted second-degree rape, two counts each of first-degree kidnapping and assault on a female and one count each of first-degree rape, first-degree sex offense and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
