Chilling 911 Call: Girl Begs Dispatch For Help
Suspect Named In Shooting

POSTED: Monday, March 1, 2010
UPDATED: 3:42 pm EST March 5, 2010
DETROIT -- Detroit police name a suspect in a double slaying that left an 8-year-girl to call 911 and report that her parents had been shot to death in the basement of a home on the city's west side.

Police are looking for Derrick Dennard Smith, 42.

According to investigators, Smith allegedly shot and killed Purcell Carson and Monica Botello as Botello's 8-year-old daughter hid in horror.

After Smith and an unknown accomplice left the home, Botello's daughter called 911 from her mother's cell phone, police said.

"My mommy's in the basement and I need emergency," the little girl said.

The dispatcher asked the little girl questions that she attempts to answer.

"Where is your mother? Put her on the phone," the dispatcher said.

"No, she's almost dead," the girl said.

"Where do you live?" the dispatcher asked.

Thegirl unsure of her address is heard asking her mother.

"Mommy, where we at? Tell me. Where we at? I got to tell the police where we at. I called 911. Where we at?"

The dispatcher continues to ask questions.

"Let me talk to your mom. Where is your mom at?" the dispatcher asked.

"She's almost dead," the little girl responded.

"Who else is in the house?"

"There is no one else in the house," the girl said.

"You need to calm down and give me an address. I don't know where you are at. You have to tell me where you are at" the dispatcher told her.

"My mommy is almost dead. Please help me. Do you promise you'll help me?" the little girl cried. The dispatcher sent the little girl outside to get the address.

"What happened to your mother?" asked the dispatcher.

"She was shot," the little girl answered. "She is still breathing. But, my dad is not."

"Let me speak to your dad. Is he there?" the dispatcher said.

"No, he's dead," the little girl answered.

Police said they released the 911 call in hopes that anyone who hears what the little girl went through will come forward with any information they have.

"This was not an easy decision, but we feel it was a necessary one to get this suspect into custody as soon as possible," Evans said. "We need people to understand what this child went through."

Watch: Police Searching For Detroit Mother's Shooter

Police said the girl was upstairs with her 6-year-old half sister, and called 911 after hearing gunshots.

Neither of the children were harmed in the shooting, nor did they see it happen, police said.

A family member of Carson said the house in the 19000 block of Glastonbury belonged to his mother.

Police said the victims appear to have known their shooters because there was no sign of forced entry.

Police said they believe two men may be responsible for the shooting and were at the house earlier in the evening before the shooting.

The girls are staying with grandparents.

Family members of Botella said she did not live in the house on Glastonbury, but had her own place in Taylor.

According to state records, Carson and Smith both have an extensive criminal history and may have been acquainted.

Smith was discharged from prison on Jan. 17.

He was convicted of armed robbery, kidnapping, felony firearms, assault with a dangerous weapon and other serious offenses.

One of his alleged victims was Carson.

He has been convicted of weapons and drug convictions.

No motive has been released.

4. Here in SF your address comes up on the screen --
when you call 911 from a home's landline. I wonder if she was calling from a cell phone?

Well now me and that witch are even.because I was going to post on that operator so the whole nation could use her as an example of what not to do in an emergency, because i was angry of her treatment of a child who obviously was in need of help.

7. The cell phone thing never occurred to me. Enhanced 911
has been available for so long that I assumed Detroit would have it----but I was thinking the child was calling from a landline.

8. Unbefuckinglievable.
It is so sad for these children. That said, why doesn't an 8-year-old child know his/her own home address? I could understand it if they had recently moved, but this doesn't appear to be the case. My child could give you her address and home phone, my work phone and her dad's work phone when she was 3!

These poor children. What's left for them? I hope there's a caring relative or friend so they can avoid the horrors of the foster care system.

10. I don't understand the anger at the dispatcher
She had to get the poor little girl calmed down to tell her where she was. The dispatcher had no idea where to send help until she could find out where the girl was.

The little girl was so understandably distraught...but I think the dispatcher had to be firm to get her to focus so that help could be sent.

12. This is not the first time this has happened. n/t
This also happened in 2006

updated 5:33 p.m. ET, Fri., April 7, 2006

DETROIT - A 5-year-old boy called 911 to report that his mother had collapsed in their apartment, but an operator told him he should not be playing on the phone, and she died before help arrived.

The family of Sherrill Turner, 46, does not know whether a swifter response could have saved her life, but relatives want to know why the operator apparently treated the call as if it were a prank.

Police said the 911 response was under investigation.

13. You are right
I remember the story well. This operator in this call with the little girl was out of line and unprofessional.she needs some sensitivity training. And it appears anger management training also.It doesn't matter who the person is adult or child there is a certain way you talk to people.when the child said she didn't know where she was and her mother was almost dead,it was time for the operator to start with what happened. This ridiculous woman started questioning if the child really even lived with her mother. the first thing she should have asked the child when she said she didn't know where she was,she should have told the girl to get her sister and go next door or across the street and find an adult. Not leave them in the house with injured people or the perp. They needed adult help and she really wasn't being any at all.this makes me so angry.I know children and some infantile adults play with the 911 emergency services, but when they find that this is the case maybe on the first offense they should be charged a hundred dollars or more for having a false claim. And if a child does it put it to the good of the parents pockets.that way when our children try to do the right thing they are not punished with the death of a love one.And this call was over five minutes long.I still say it is some bs.

15. "but my dad is not." "Let me speak to your dad..." WTF?
She just clearly stated that he isn't breathing. I don't know about you, but if I even HOLD my breath I can't speak. Being dead would certainly complicate the effort.
