34. Romney: shell companies and offshore tax havens

Island tax havens factor into Romney's business success
Second of two parts
December 17, 2007|Bob Drogin , Times Staff Writer

BOSTON — While in private business, Mitt Romney utilized shell companies in two offshore tax havens to help eligible investors avoid paying U.S. taxes, federal and state records show.
snip

In the Cayman Islands, Romney was listed as a general partner and personally invested in BCIP Associates III Cayman, a private equity fund that is registered at a post office box on Grand Cayman Island and that indirectly buys equity in U.S. companies. The arrangement shields foreign investors from U.S. taxes they would pay for investing in U.S. companies.

Romney still retains an investment in the Cayman fund through a trust. Campaign disclosure forms show the investment paid him more than $1 million last year in dividends, interest and capital gains.

In Bermuda, Romney served as president and sole shareholder for four years of Sankaty High Yield Asset Investors Ltd. It funneled money into Bain Capital's Sankaty family of hedge funds, which invest in bonds and other debt issued by corporations, as well as bank loans.

Like thousands of similar financial entities, Sankaty maintains no office or staff in Bermuda. Its only presence consists of a nameplate at a lawyer's office in downtown Hamilton, capital of the British island territory.

"It's just a mail drop, essentially,"
said Marc B. Wolpow, who worked with Romney for nine years at Bain Capital and who set up Sankaty Ltd. in October 1997 without ever visiting Bermuda. "There's no one doing any work down there other than lawyers." snip

:puke:

If this guy gets the repuke nomination in 2012, we need to know who we're dealing with. This guy's a tax cheat ---apparently there was no company in the Caymans at all. :puke:

22. It isn't that. It's the attention that is happening on the web and the
letters and emails that they get. They know who is watching regardless of Nielsen, although that counts too. Let's face it, if people weren't watching, there wouldn't be this thread that they can track; there wouldn't be the letters and emails. The only feedback they would have would be from the entertainment columnists. Don't think they don't follow DU. I put up a post the other day and found it on Google about twenty minutes later.

Now your cable/satellite company can track your viewing habits and turned them over to the rating research companies.

56. You're the 1st person I heard say that. I'vw believed that for a long time!
I'm positive each cable co. monitors it's viewership for their own purposes, so why wouldn't they turn this info over to the ratings cos? That's one of the main reasons I NEVER put FOX News on my TV! I know if something worth mentioning is said on there, DUers or Rachel or keith will tell me about it and I sure don't want to do anything to improve their false ratings.

57. Say what?
You mean ratings come from something besides those sample diaries sent to Nielsen families? A black van with a twirling antenna on top is running around my city, grabbing signals out of the air, like in those old movies where the Gestapo is trying to find the secret radio of the underground?

I always wondered about that, how the numbers for how many folks were watching the Super Bowl come out so quickly.

Something else to google, I guess.

Nobody who lives here goes to Leno taping! They give the tickets away up at tourist traps like Universal Studios.

64. Those shows are for tourists
I was born and have lived in LA all my life and have never been to one of those shows and the only people I know who have are from somewhere else. I used to go to the Farmer's Market on Fairfax next to the CBS studios and they were always giving out tickets to shows. All the tourist would lined up for the Price is Right. One time some fellow from CBS kept trying to talk me into being in the audience for Roseanne (she had a talk show at time) even would pay me for it. Who had time, I didn't ... told him no and had to keep saying it I finally had to get rude and walk off.
