3. Loved the quote.
It surprises me more people aren't crazy for this here.

"If you are going to engage in war the overwhelming number of people that will die is civilians." Truer now than ever.

6. Amy was great.
She was almost crying at the end.

We must keep to the example set by Howard Zinn.

9. Amy is always great. I think Homeland Sekurity should check her DNA
because I don't think she's from this planet.

12. I saw and met her in Cambridge MA when she was promoting
her book "the Exception to the Rulers" with her brother plus she had Noam Chomsky show up since he lives in that town and i met him briefly as well. I love living in between Boston and NYC! you definitely should get a group and go see her in April! She's always speaking in my neck of the woods.

Marion Wright Edelmen's speech was great as well just now!

14. I saw the perfect phrase to describe "Howie", as Marian Wright Edelman calls him.....
"The Pragmatic Revolutionary" ...... It was in something I read earlier.

16. This thread should have a brazillion recs.
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 05:56 PM by EFerrari
I rec this a brazillion times for Howard.

A good man. A man that asked not to be posted to the South as he was finishing up his PhD with a wife and two kids and a man that wound up supporting the Civil Rights movement at great personal cost. A man that just worked with his students at Spelman in an honest, ethical way. A man who was always on the right side of things with everything he had.

17. Some on this board resent Zinn's "slanted" view of history......
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 06:10 PM by marmar
..... I've seen that written here more than once. Only the whitewashed version of history is acceptable to some.

19. Howard Zinn was a scrupulous historian.
There is no tearing down his work as "slanted". It's not "bias" to bring facts to a discussion, is it?

Howard Zinn was attacked for decades because he had the facts on his side.

Do his detractors remember that he negotiated the release of three of our pilots during the Viet Nam War?

Where were all these chickenhawks when Howard went to Hanoi WHILE WE WERE BOMBING IT and came out with three of our people and a request for negotiation?

THAT is who Howard Zinn was. He walked the walk. That we had him for so long was just our great good luck.

.....I was a little taken aback when I saw some DUers using them.

20. I didn't know David Horowitz was on DU!
He sure wasn't appreciated when NPR asked him to opine on the passing of Howard Zinn. NPR was the target of an email barrage that resulted in a lot of lost listeners thanks to that. I was among them.

25. For people who missed this, CSPAN will archive it
and there is usually a transcript, too.

I'd check their search engine in a few days:
