Bennie Abrams, a University of Mississippi football player, died after collapsing during training today. He was 20 years old. According to WMCTV.com, "trainers noticed that Abram was experiencing difficulty early Friday shortly after the workout started."

WTVA reports that Abram "was about 15 minutes into the conditioning portion of the workout" when the problems were discovered.

In a statement, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said:

"Bennie was a fine young man and a hard worker. He was a great person to be around and well-mannered young man. His loss is so tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and all who knew Bennie."

A MySpace page for a Bennie Abram lists the same hometown as the player who died today. Scroll down for photos from the page, as well as a screengrab of the profile.

1. In other news, a homeless man was found dead in a park.

Nobody noticed. Both of these deaths were unfortunate. Neither are national news. Belongs in the Mississippi forum or the Sports forum, IMO.

3. A healthy athlete dies is NOT the same news.
BTW, do you have a link to the homeless death? Or did you just make it up out of your head to contrast with a REAL death and to belittle those who express concern?

5. I can give you links to hundreds of homeless deaths. Or, you
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 03:12 PM by MineralMan
can look them up yourself. Google is working just fine today. I guess you don't take my point. Here's your link. Take your pick:

How is the death of a healthy athlete of any more importance than the death of a homeless man? How is it important enough to be anywhere but on the sports pages?

Truly...the answer to that question bears some consideration.

6. Do you? What else do you think? It's very hard to tell.
I think you should stop assuming things about others. Look to yourself.

10. Amy bishops murders her co-workers - not news either I guess
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 05:12 PM by stray cat
what 4 people murdered in the grand scheme of life if its not you or a loved one?

Actually torturing someone isn't news either - do you know how many get tortured in Rwanda a day?

2. damn. how sad
did the "trainers" go for help right away, or did they push him to "work through it"? I remember how bad high school was. I can't imagine college when they're expected to bring in so much money for the schools and NCAA.

7. My son had a brachial-plexus injury and a C 2-3 neck injury
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 03:19 PM by SoCalDem
in high school football..and was told to "walk it off".. His right arm was paralyzed for almost 18 months and the neurologist said his neck injury was as close to being a "Superman" injury as anyone would want to come. Our son had 18 months of rehab and even all these years later, he still has a "numb" spot about the circumference of a grapefruit on his back, where the nerves did not regenerate completely. He was lucky, ( he regained about 98% usage of the arm) but many kids are not.

We did see a lawyer, but he said we really did not have a case because we signed all the forms that basically absolved them of any responsibility in case of injury, and after years of litigation (if we chose to fight it in court), his injury would be likely healed and any jury seeing a healthy young man, would probably not award much, if any damages...

8. sorry to hear that and yeah, sounds like he was lucky.
High school coaches, football especially are ignorant right wingers, from my experience. Kids get hurt all the time because of those oafs. The sport is dangerous enough, then add in some clueless fuck with a hardon for "being tough".
