Several years ago, my work often took me to our state capitol. I'd usually drive up, arrive in mid-morning and spend several hours visiting state offices. I usually left by mid-afternoon to avoid the rush hour traffic.
On such a trip one June morning, I was about to make the last right turn that would take me downtown to the capitol when I noticed a young boy, about nine or ten years old, standing in the median with a cardboard box containing six or seven squirming puppies of undetermined lineage. His printed sign advertised "Republican puppies: $2.00 each"
I smiled at his enterprise and his apparent partisanship at his young age and sped past on my way to a meeting.
At about 2:30 that afternoon, I was headed home and approached the same intersection. There was the same kid with some of the same puppies, but with a different sign. Now, he was selling "Democratic puppies: $10.00 each". Intrigued, I circled the block, parked and walked back to the young entrepreneur.
"When I saw you this morning, these were Republican pups and cost $2.00 each", I began. "Now, they are Democratic pups and you're asking $10.00. What changed?" I asked with a grin.
He gave me his best "You gotta be kiddin'" look and said: "Just look at 'em, mister---they've opened their eyes!"
From the mouths of babes!
