FBI wants records kept of Web sites visited
by Declan McCullagh

WASHINGTON--The FBI is pressing Internet service providers to record which Web sites customers visit and retain those logs for two years, a requirement that law enforcement believes could help it in investigations of child pornography and other serious crimes.

FBI Director Robert Mueller supports storing Internet users' "origin and destination information," a bureau attorney said at a federal task force meeting on Thursday.

1. The obvious solution
is for all of us to visit hundreds or thousands of web sites every day, 365 days a year.

Let's see them try to sort through the resulting mountains of data overload.

3. Sorry, they have computers to do that.
And, since they know what sites they are interested in, finding YOU pointing your browser there is very easy.

I know you weren't serious, but just in case someone thinks that surfing a lot helps to hide their "sensitive" surfing (hey, DU might be considered "sensitive" someday!)... I thought I'd disabuse them of that idea.

2. I wonder if they know just how EASY this is to defeat.
VPN to offshore internet provider.

Surf all you want, even to those sites that they are interested in.

If enough people do it, there isn't enough computing power at the NSA or FBI to decrypt all the sessions, especially with decent encryption on the VPN and changing the keys periodically.

The offshore location has to be an ISP and government that will not cooperate with the Feebs.
