U.S. soldier 'waterboarded his own daughter, 4, because she couldn't recite alphabet'
Joshua Tabor admitted to police that he used a CIA torture technique on his 4-year-old daughter because he was angry she couldn’t recite the alphabet.

As his daughter ‘squirmed’ to get away, Tabor said he submerged her face three or four times until the water was lapping around her forehead and jawline.

Tabor, 27, who had won custody of his daughter only four weeks earlier, admitted choosing the punishment because the girl was terrified of water.

Tabor, a soldier at the Lewis-McChord base in Tacoma, Washington, was arrested after being seen walking around his neighbourhood wearing a Kevlar military helmet and threatening to break windows.

Police discovered the alleged waterboarding when they went to his home in the Tacoma suburb of Yelm and spoke to his girlfriend.

31. When you blame Cheney you let this asshole off the hook, make him less of a monster
Sick and cruel people have used water to torture people for millennia before Cheney. Don't make excuses for the atrocity this man wrought on his own child.

Walking around the neighborhood with a helmet and threatening to break windows?

It's padded room time.

5. Wait, the story says he pushed her head into a bowl of water until it was "lapping around her
forehead and jawline." What does that have to do with waterboarding? That's BS.

12. Um, no, he was pushing her face in a bowl of water, which is cruel and abusive.
But it's not waterboarding, I don't think.

18. You're right...
I apologize. The heat of the moment and all that. It just hurts that some children, more than we care to think about suffer this sort of abuse at the hands of those who are to love and care for them.

I'd like to kick the sob's ass. Dunking a 4 year old for not knowing their ABC's.

23. I accept your apology.
No big deal. I realize I was focusing much more on the journalism rather than the actual story. I totally agree with you about child abuse. To me, there is no excuse -- poverty, mental health, PTSD, drinking -- for abusing a child. None. I hope that man is haunted by the same terror his daughter felt when she saw daddy filling up the bowl of water. No wonder she couldn't recite the alphabet.

20. Actually this is worse than waterboarding.
It is actually very difficult to kill someone by waterboarding.

Of course the primitive part of the human brain doesn't know that and that is why it is used as torture.
The reason why when torturing someone they don't simply dunk someone underwater is the is a high risk of actually drowning someone.
So you are right it isn't waterboarding.... it is actually far worse.

Not only is it torture he could have killed her too.

However me thinks the father is likely suffering from mental illness.

16. Waterboarding is designed so that the person believes...
...s/he is being drowned. You tell me the difference.

21. The difference is she was actually drowning.
So it isn't water boarding it is simply drowning someone.
If he held her under too long, or she coughed underwater she would be dead right now.

There is a reason why water boarding is used instead of dunking someone under water.

He was assaulting her, not torturing her. That's how I see it.

28. a previous thread on this used the term "waterboarding" and so did he
holding the child on the counter, forcing her head under water--and the child is TERRIFIED of water (wonder why THAT is)

the previously posted thread and links showed that he has physically abused this child repeatedly. whether it is actual "waterboarding", as the title of the story says, or not, it is child abuse and horrible.

30. Totally agree.
It's abuse. I read in another thread that the girl was on her back and the back of her head was submerged. I don't think it's waterboarding, but it's definitely cruel and abusive. I hope this guy gets what's coming to him.

9. When some of these guys come marching home again...
no one will be safe. Our soldiers need to be taken care of when they come back from war. Not sent out with their DD214 or whatever it is they are issued.

I'm not buying that no one - knows at discharge, that some of these guys aren't ready to return home without counseling and more.

His poor daughter, how awful to have your Dad do something so terrifying you at age 4.

Holy fuck - can we just once talk about the fucking psycho father without deciding the mother, whom we know nothing about, is worse? She could be unable to care for the child for any number of reasons and the father could have lied his ass off in court to get custody. Obviously he lied about the state of his mental health.
