Both the House and Senate have now approved the Emergency war funding bill, and will be sending it to Dumbyass for approval. Bush has already stated over and over that he will veto any such legislation that calls for a timetable. His veto will effectively end chances for this specific bill to be passed, as it is doubtful that the Dems can muster the 2/3 vote to override.
In the middle of this whole shitstorm is the safety of our troops overseas fighting this pointless war. One of those soldiers is my brother-in-law. He is in a transport unit with the National Guard - don't even get me started on my issues with the National Guard being deployed to guard any other nation than this one. They are stationed south of Baghdad, and do supply convoys to the other bases around the country. While he's not in a combat unit, it's still unnerving every time he ventures outside the wire on a transport mission. With IEDs everywhere, it's a risk, and I'm proud of the work he's doing over there, but he's in a war zone, so we're all constantly worried for his safety.
We talk every couple weeks online and it's always interesting to see his reaction to the news that we hear. Last night was one of our particularly long talks and I asked him about the reactions over there to the politics of war that are going on. He said very plainly that the surge is bullshit. Flooding the city with troops is doing nothing more than sending the insurgents and other enemy forces running for the outskirts and the suburbs. They're not in the last throes, they're just keeping to the perimeter to avoid capture.
He's been reading the transcripts of Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman's family's testimonies in Congress, and he's disgusted. The cover-ups to continue the whole patriotism aspect of the war is revolting. He only has a few more months over there, but every day he's away from his family and his wife has to make it that much harder to keep his morale up.
George...your war is lost...get a grip and bring our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters home. The American people didn't sanction your war, and they certainly didn't ask for your surge. Your mission was not accomplished, it never will be, and you have to be okay with that. The Middle East was not meant to be stable. It hasn't been for over 5000 years...what makes you, the least diplomatic president in my lifetime, think you can solve it, much less with a military presence. If you're not capable of utilizing diplomacy to end this disaster, at least bring our people home.
