WTF of the day: Schoolbus driver caught DUI with bus load of kids

This just happened in my local school district. How does someone like this a) get a commercial driving license, b) get any job related to schools? isn't this what criminal background checks are supposed to be for?

Mount Mansfield Union Bus driver had past DUI conviction

ST. JOHNSBURY -- A bus driver busted for drunken-driving while transporting the Mount Mansfield Union boys hockey team had a previous DUI conviction.

Court papers reveal that McBrayer has a criminal history, including a drunken-driving conviction in Florida and other convictions in the state of Georgia.

Vermont Corrections Commissioner Anthony Pallito said McBrayer has robbery-related convictions in 2003 and 2004 in the state of Georgia and has been under supervision by Vermont Probation and Parole since 2007.

The team rode the school bus without incident to Woodstock for an 8:10 p.m. game Saturday. The MMU team, which won 5-3, had to wait for McBrayer to bring the bus back to Union Arena at about 10 p.m. The team eventually piled into the bus for the return trip, but the passengers realized something was amiss.

The bus was taking wide turns and swerving across the road. Yeates and Manning ordered McBrayer to stop the bus at about 10:20 p.m. near the Woodstock Inn, which is about two miles from the rink. The police and Leah Main, the mother of an MMU player, were called.

Main, who also drives a bus for MMU, was able to bring the bus and the team back to Jericho at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Pallito said both criminal cases from Georgia were disclosed to MMU bus-transportation coordinator Bob Magee. ... “We did pass the information along. That is kind of standard procedure. They absolutely knew,” the commissioner said Tuesday afternoon.

Magee later disputed that he was told about the convictions. He said McBrayer filed an application at MMU last year, and a probation officer was one of his references, but all the paperwork and processing went to the superintendent’s office.
