Office of Special Counsel to investigate attorney firings and Rove's political activities

Low-key office launches high-profile inquiry

The Office of Special Counsel will investigate U.S. attorney firings and other political activities led by Karl Rove.

By Tom Hamburger, Times Staff Writer
April 24, 2007

WASHINGTON — Most of the time, an obscure federal investigative unit known as the Office of Special Counsel confines itself to monitoring the activities of relatively low-level government employees, stepping in with reprimands and other routine administrative actions for such offenses as discriminating against military personnel or engaging in prohibited political activities.

But the Office of Special Counsel is preparing to jump into one of the most sensitive and potentially explosive issues in Washington, launching a broad investigation into key elements of the White House political operations that for more than six years have been headed by chief strategist Karl Rove.

The new investigation, which will examine the firing of at least one U.S. attorney, missing White House e-mails, and White House efforts to keep presidential appointees attuned to Republican political priorities, could create a substantial new problem for the Bush White House.

<...>

In the course of investigating the U.S. attorney matter and the PowerPoint presentations, Democratic congressional investigators discovered e-mails written by White House personnel using accounts maintained by the Republican National Committee.

3. Am I wrong? The Office of Special Counsel does not make public reports of their findings?
The fact that an internal investigation is conducted by a political appointee of the President does not engender confidence that it will get to the bottom of the corruption. Especially if there is no public report of findings and conclusions.

5. A Bush appointee investigates the Bush admin
From USA Today:

Scott Bloch, the head of the office, wouldn't identify the officials his staff plans to interview. "We will take the evidence where it leads us," Bloch, a Bush appointee, tells the paper. "We will not leave any stone unturned."

7. This is definitely a sign the WH is concerned
From Salon:

It would be easy enough to write off the OSC's investigation as a fox-guarding-the-henhouse approach -- or, at the very least, as the source of endless "there's an ongoing investigation so we can't comment" statements from the White House. But NYU executive branch expert Paul Light tells the Times that the investigation is, in fact, a big deal. "It is a significant moment for the administration and Karl Rove," Light says. "It speaks to the growing sense that there is a nexus at the White House that explains what's going on in these disparate investigations."

9. If I had to guess, Bloch already has received the results of this investigation from Karl...
If it is internal, and there will no public report of findings, then why would anyone believe a Bush political appointee coming out and publicly exonerating the Bush White House for all issues?

Certainly sounds like a Rove inspired and directed operation.
