Rahm Emanuel Reported Eyeing Mayor's Job
Source: (WBBM)Chicago

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- There's word this morning that President Barack Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, already is looking at life beyond the White House and that he might be eyeing the 5th floor at Chicago's City Hall.

It was no secret that then-Chicago Congressman Rahm Emanuel was less than thrilled when the newly-elected president asked him to give up his seat in the House to become the White House chief of staff a year ago.

Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn tells Newsradio 780 she's heard from people close to Emanuel that he's told them he's almost ready to leave.

"He's said, 'The job of chief of staff is an 18-month job, it's a burn-out job.' He's made it quite clear that he's not happy and that he's totally stressed all the time and that he's thinking of running for mayor of Chicago," Quinn said.

It's third-hand, but I will take it. Hope it is true.

1. Nope, no way.
Rahm will not leave until January of 2013.

Bank on that.

3. We'll see.
If the quote is accurate, it will be this year.

5. How many chiefs of staff have remained for two terms?
Or do you have 1st hand knowledge of your idol's plans?

6. Andy Card made it the longest in recent history.
5+ years. Most of them don't make it a full two years, though.

12. That is what I thought...
Seems unlikely that Rahm will stay for eight years. It's a tough job, denying the base.

11. I always figured you would be one to have that kind of access.
Call it a hunch.

14. The closest I've ever been to Rahm Emmanuel
was punching the hole next to his name in the 2002 general election.

The closest prior to that time was punching the hole next to the name above his name in the 2002 primary election.

2. I seriously doubt he would challenge Mayor Daley.
Unless Daley is retiring?

4. "The mayor has no intention of not being mayor."
The White House could have thrown cold water on the idea. Instead, a White House source told the Tribune that "Rahm is 100 percent focused on the job at hand -- serving President Obama as his chief of staff."

From such non-denial denials, a demonic campaign may yet be hatched. If so, I might get down on my hands and knees and beg Mayor Richard Daley to stay. This would frighten the mayor and quite possibly unhinge him -- permanently.

So I called a mayoral source. "It's news to us," said the source. "The mayor has no intention of not being mayor."

7. If he was less than thrilled, the world "No" would have been appropriate...
At the time there were rumors that he was trying to kick Pelosi out of her comfy chair as Speaker.

I Rahm wants power, the Mayor of Chicago isn't his ticket. Run for Governor.

8. Daley Dodges Rahm Rumor
Mayor Daley today said that he wouldn't respond to a recent report that floated the idea that President Obama's Chief of Staff, Rahm Emmanuel, was angling to run for mayor of Chicago.

"I don't read gossip columns," Daley said at a press conference at Hitch Elementary School. "I'm not responding to gossip."

The idea was floated Tuesday by Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn, who argued that Rahm may not have fired Desiree Rogers because he needs her support for a shot at Chicago's fifth floor.

13. I think he should do this... and resign from Obama's Administration now to begin campaigning!
This is a great idea! I'm all for it!

15. This is an attention game
If the quote is accurate it is a game, if it is inaccurate it is still probably a game.

Maybe it is to rally the conservadems, maybe it is to give hope to the liberal/progressive base. Or maybe its a vanity play by Rahm. No matter what, this is a game.
