I'll be back when the horse funeral is over
Now, I love animals and feel bad for Barbaro and all that, but sheesh!

Now tonight we will be subjected to lead news stories about a race horse with a bum leg and how gallant the horse was (even though a forken horse ain't smart enough to be "gallant" and could be outsmarted by the average pig). By 6:15 on the national media news you'll have thought the equivalent of Ghandi, the Pope or Julius Caesar had died.

Never mind that the war in Iraq rages on and that it normally isn't covered anyway or that some American son or daughter was ripped to shreds by bullets or an IED or an Iraqi kid had his guts torn out while walking with his mom through a marketplace.

Stop the forken presses! A forken horse died!

Crap, I won't listen to it.

1. Really?
You'll be back after the state funeral and national period of mourning?

Here's hoping it's shorter than Ford's.

8. Stop rolling your eyes
The OP made no mention of DU, or horse threads therein. Unless you consider DU to be national media that is.
Thousands of soldiers have returned to the States with their legs blown OFF, we hear very little about them in the MSM.
You'd think this damn horse was a missing blonde girl or something.

Now if Edwards had built a barn in his mansion maybe they wouldn't have had to kill Barbaro and he could have lived happily every after, so, if there is a moral to this story it's that it is John Edwards' fault that the nag had to be put to sleep.

7. You wanna know what's really sad? How much money went into rehabbing that horse?
And then ask, "What kind of health care do you have?"

To even things out, I think I'm going to make my every day actions available for wagering, so that Vegas can help me if I should hurt my typin' hand.

20. How much money did he make for his "owners"?
I'm not saying people shouldn't have good health care of course, but he made people's living for them and it's their obligation to give him veterinary care when needed.

25. I don't doubt that
It's just that if someone has a truck they use for work and it needs repairs, no one thinks that's an odd expense. But make it a living being and all of a sudden there are all kinds of other priorities (to judge by this thread).

34. I betcha they got some sperm mechanically already frozen and waiting
for artificial insemination.

Do they allow prize mares and stallions to mate naturally? I thought for sure they wouldn't take a chance on one of them gettinginjured during the "act."

44. The Thoroughbred Jockey Club does not allow artificial insemination.
The owners knew he would most likely never be able to breed natually
because of the damaged leg on the right hind.

His owners have probably spent about a million in vet care in the
last eight months - half a million would be a conservative estimate.

These owners have been in the business a long time and have gone
to similiar lenghts to save geldings who had no chance of reproducing.

46. I was thinking about bulls and cows, I guess. I remember being surprised
to learn that dairy cows are artifically inseminated because of risk of injury to the cow during mating (not to mention the care and maintenance of the bull, which must be something to behold when a bunch of cows are um, ready.)

Thanks for the info. Ya learn something every day on DU...

15. Hello..? ANYTHING that makes the public feel compassion
is NOT a bad thing.... While we must find a way to translate that emotion to action against the carnage that is befalling our military in Iraq and Afganistan-- and plenty of innocent civilians-- at least this shows that harried and often apathetic Americans are still capable of CARING.

Find a way to translate the emotion. Don't castigate people for feeling it.

I found where rams are given the electrode treatment. So far nothing about stallions, except they are tricked by an artificial vagina.

Artificial Insemination:

Semen is obtained using an artificial vagina; motility, morphology, and concentration are determined; and the number of morphologically normal, progressively motile sperm is calculated. Semen extender containing an antibiotic is then added to semen to improve sperm survival. A commonly used semen extender is nonfat dry skim milk glucose extender (instant nonfat dry milk <2.4 g>, glucose <4.9 g>, sterile distilled water <100 mL>). One of the following antibiotics can be added: ticarcillin, 100 mg (1 mg/mL); gentamicin, reagent grade, must be buffered with 2 mL 8.4% NaHCO3, 100 mg (1 mg/mL); or amikacin sulfate 100 mg (1 mg/mL).

The mare is prepared for insemination by application of a tail wrap and cleansing of the perineal area. If soap is used, it should be rinsed thoroughly to remove any residue. Mares should be inseminated with at least 250-500 × 106 progressively motile, morphologically normal spermatozoa prior to ovulation. Insemination is accomplished by depositing the semen into the body of the uterus using a sterile, plastic insemination pipette. Disposable equipment is recommended to prevent contamination. Normal sperm cells can be expected to remain viable in the mare’s reproductive tract for at least 48 hr. Mares should be examined by palpation and ultrasonography per rectum to determine that ovulation occurs.

29. Edwards is actually the one at fault for Barbaro's death
Now after looking at pics of Taj Edwards I figure there has to be a barn in there somewhere. So if Edwards had offered to stable Barbaro maybe his owners wouldn't have killed him and Edwards would have taken him over to his new place and become the horsey set hero as well as the poor peoples' champeen (sic). IMO Edwards lost the election with this gaffe.

Kerry was wise enough not to waste campaign time and funds and focused himself on the Senate where he will do a lot of good. Edwards futile bid comes off as a bit self-centered. But yes this whole fiasco sealed his coffin.

45. Everyone always says they're "leaving" - no one ever does
If we expand on this we can have a 3 way string on:

1 - Horse funeral

2 - John Edwards' disgustingly huge, gargantuan house

3 - Hollow, empty threats to "leave" by DU posters
