Buzz Grows for Thune Presidential Bid

"While most of the 2012 GOP presidential buzz is focused on a group of former and soon-to-be former governors, Sen. John Thune (R-SD) is increasingly being viewed as the Capitol's most likely White House contender," reports CQ Politics.

"The telegenic first-term senator's national profile is no doubt on the rise -- as evidenced by the South Dakota's Republican's increased leadership role this Congress and extensive fundraising for his non-competitive re-election race next year."

"When asked about any presidential aspirations, Thune said he was only focused on his re-election campaign -- even though he has not attracted a single Democratic opponent so far."

1. I used to live in SD, when Thune was in Congress, and I can't think

of a single thing he's ever done that would garner any "buzz" beyond being somewhat good-looking. He's kind of an empty suit.

9. He'd be a perfect GOP candidate...he is just like Reagan
know nothing, do nothing and see nothing. And he has the sh***est grin I have ever seen.

2. I don't understand why his race is non-competetive
although some Dakota relations said he was pretty popular, but he just barely squeaked out a win over Daschle and I figured that he was vulnerable to Herseth-Sandlin, the Bush-dog Democrat in the House who is also a state-wide candidate and who won by bigger margins than Thune. I have been thinking we could pick that seat up, but I guess the DSCC thinks she shouldn't even try.

7. Just putting his name in the hat for 2016 or 2020
Republicans often pick someone who "paid his dues" in prior primary periods.

But I don't see this being a serious run for 2012. He has no executive experience (or even real leadership experience).

I expect that he'll eventually take a turn or two at SD Governor and (assuming he wins and can claim some success at something) THEN a white house run.

Or perhaps he's really thinking VP?

Even a 2010 Governor run wouldn't give him much plausible executive experience to gain presidential legitimacy.

Of course... I remember seeing Obama speak at the convention around the time he entered the senate. I thought "this guy is going places. Give him a term or two in the senate... then a term or two as Governor... and he'll be tought to beat for a white house run". WhadaIknow?

8. By 2012 there will have been a story about every Republican at the Great White Persons' Hope
They're grasping at straws. Not to say Obama is a shoo-in. Not at this point. But all these political stories are bullshit at this point.
