Jesus said please STFU.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him" (Matthew 6:5-8).

2. It's amazing the denial so many alleged Christians live in, isn't it?
You can't turn the TV on Sunday morning without seeing some jackass begging for money, praying pompously, and strutting around like a peacock.

3. I always always think of that verse when I see those loud-mouths
pushing Christianity like a set of ginsu knives, as well as when my holier-than-thou sister-in-law posts religious screeds on her Facebook status.

Do these people even have a clue about what Jesus said about doing that sort of thing, or do they just not care?

4. Someone at the gym had a televangelist on.
He said something to the effect of "When you had a job, did you properly tithe the Lord?"

That's right - this jackal was trying to convince people to bribe god via him in order to obtain or keep employment. How these fucks aren't charged with fraud is utterly beyond me.

8. Tithing is a good idea - but for the needy, not for churches.
Edited on Fri Dec-04-09 02:31 PM by TexasObserver
I've given at least ten percent of my income to real, direct action charities for decades. I wouldn't give a dime to a church. They're mainly social clubs where like minded people go to reinforce their own biases and prejudices.

I'm fond of saying "isn't it convenient that God always believes the same thing as the people who attend a particular church?" People worship their own prejudices, and call it God's will.

10. Horizontal prayer vs vertical prayer
Horizontal prayer is posturing for those around you. It is loud and mostly annoying to those who are not your fellow travelers.

Vertical prayer is quiet, solitary, and between you and that to whom you pray.

11. In that quote, Jesus didn't say "please STFU."
Nothing there suggests the "please," just the "STFU."

15. Quote that to your annoying fundie co-workers and watch what little color
is in their face drain completely.

Possibly the most useful part of Matthew (which is full of arguments to the RRR wackadoos.)
