Memo to Bart Stupak: It's not about abortion. It's not about you. It's about the economy.
As long as health care costs are not brought under control, bankruptcies are going to keep escalating. Families are going to keep being ruined. More and more mortgages are going to go unpaid, which is going to blight the bottom line of more and more banks forcing, which means more foreclosures and more bailouts to fund.
Unless we can bring down the cost of health care, more and more small businesses are going to find themselves unable to compete. They'll either lose more and more qualified workers to big corporations that can afford to pay for health insurance, or try to keep those employees by paying ridiculously inflated rates for lousy policies. That means spending more and more money that could have gone for expansion, upkeep, or even hiring more workers to line the pockets of the insurance industry.
The health care crisis is not only destroying - literally - the lives of millions of people. It's one of the things preventing our economy from recovering. The House bill won't solve the problem, but it's a step in the right direction. It provides a framework we can build on to try and rebuild after this disaster.
We can't afford to screw around with your petty little amendment now. We can't risk having this bill killed because you got your panties in a snit about your own little wedge issue.
We can't afford to lose this fight because you think that the long-standing law that specifically says "no Federal money for abortions" wasn't strong enough.
We can't afford to sacrifice the lives and fortunes of millions of Americans on the altar of your ego.
It's not abortion. It's not conscience.
It's the economy, Stupak.
So where are your priorities, Bart? What's more important? Your country? Or your little temper tantrum of an amendment?
