Fuck you Mary Landrieu

Landrieu blasts public option
By Eric Zimmermann - 10/22/09 12:33 PM ET

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) echoed Republican criticisms of a public option today, suggesting it would bankrupt the country.

Describing the public option as a "government-run, taxpayer subsidized, national insurance plan," Landrieu said it would likely replicate the problems faced by Medicare and Medicaid.

"Why don't we fix the two public options we have now instead of creating a third one," she told NPR's "Tell Me More."

Asked about polls showing public support for a government plan, Landrieu said the questions should be phrased differently.

"I think if you asked, do you want a public option but it would force the government to go bankrupt, people would say no," she said.

She needs to go - is there not anyone in that state that could beat her?

6. An e-mail address is available on her website.
I sent the following to her last week:

As a Medicare enrollee (as is my husband) and the mother of a recent college graduate whose private insurance premiums we continue to pay due to his inability to find a job with benefits in this economy, I believe that I am in a somewhat unique position to evaluate what would help us.

My husband and I still pay over $700 a month in health insurance premiums, even with Medicare coverage. This does not include our son's premium. Private insurers aren't going to go broke if Medicare is extended to all because people will still buy Medicare supplemental policies and prescription drug coverage, if allowed, as we have done and are doing. This flies in the face of your assertion that people expect free health care. Medicare does not equal free.

We are not wealthy people. We drive a ten-year-old car. If we paid less in insurance premiums, we would have more discretionary income to buy things we would like to buy, go to movies, dine out, etc. Multiply our circumstances by the millions of people who are in a similar situation, and it is not hard to see that the cost of health insurance is dragging down the entire economy.

I believe that Medicare For All is the best way out of this morass. Most people understand it (or if they don't, they have a friend or relative who can explain it to them), and the bureaucracy is already in place to cope with it, saving millions (maybe billions) in startup costs for a completely new program. This would not be a "government takeover" of health care any more than Medicare has been.

Please don't be afraid to help resolve this problem. People out here are hurting. I know two families here in our town who have lost their homes due to medical expenses, and both had employer-sponsored health insurance. Medicare For All would not be a panacea, but it would be a huge help to families, especially those who are uninsured or under-insured right now. Please be a part of the solution to this problem instead of obstructing a health care reform plan.

Although you are not my Senator, I have already contacted both of my Senators and my Congressman. I believe that it may be helpful to voice my opinion to more Senators who voice dissenting opinions about a “public option.” Other countries provide health care for their people. There are some things government needs to do. At this point in time, national health insurance is one of those things.

Thanks for your time and attention.

I suggest that it could be a good idea if more of us appealed to the Senators who are reticent about the public option, especially the Democrats, even if they aren't our own Senators. It can't hurt, and it may help. If there is an e-mail option on their website, it's very easy to do.

9. This was after
she stated her opinion that the reason people were for a "public option" was because they thought it meant "free health care."

I wanted to let her know that people are not that naive.

27. What's causing Medicare to go bankrupt, Mary?!?
The lack of cost controls on insurance companies and providers! The best solution for that is SINGLE PAYER. Second best is a super robust public option and many other little things in the health care reform bills under consideration. Take a hike, you nimwit corporate shill!

and pay closer attention to the CBO reports.

The public option, pay as you go, is revenue neutral.

Anybody that unaware has no business casting a vote in the Senate.

39. There is a stark difference between Landrieu and Lieberman
Landrieu represents a state that went 6 to 4 for McCain and even more for Bush. You either vote as a conservative or you don't get elected, period.

Lieberman represents one of the bluest states in the country. He is genuinely an asshole who has no political survival reason to vote against the party. He does it because he can and because he's ideologically conservative.
