Day Care May Oust Sex Offenders
Families Concerned About Bus Stop Location Take Action

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There is a new proposal that seeks to oust nearly 100 sex offenders by building a day care near their Central Florida homes.

What began as concern over a school bus stop located on Orange Blossom Trail near a mobile home park that houses more than 90 sex offenders became a plan to push them out in the name of children’s safety after a proposal to move the bus stop didn’t work.

The woman who came up with the plan, Barbara Farris, said she wants them out and away from the public school bus stop. In fact, Farris has been sitting down the street, protesting their presence.

“We’ve been out here for eight nights, slept out here, watching these sex offenders,” Farris said. “We watch them do crack, pick up prostitutes.”

1. This is a weird situation.
I would not like to live near convicted sex offenders, but I also realize they have to live somewhere.
I feel very conflicted about it, to be honest.

2. i agree..
A convicted murderer can live anywhere once released, but sex offenders are basically tracked for life. But, I have 2 small kids, and I sure as heck wouldn't let them wait for the bus across the street form 90 released sex offenders either. What an ugly situation...

3. Forcing them to all live in one trailer park...
... sounds like a great plan. What could go wrong?

:sarcasm:

4. Actually, I don't mind that at all. As long as parents know which park it is.

6. well, the more I think about it, its wrong to assume that where they live will
stop them. They don't have to stay in their trailer park.

9. No, that's true. But when you know where they're most LIKELY to be,
AND it's all in one small area, that can only be helpful in terms of avoidance. Sort of like a wasp nest. Yes, there are wasps everywhere, but I don't have to stand next to the hive.

10. I would prefer to have them all in one place and for the cops and parents...
...to know where that place is.

IMO, seems it would be a hell of a lot easier and make more sense to find a different bus stop.

5. agreed, but do you get my point? they have to live somewhere, and if everyone
refuses to to let them live near them, where can they go? It almost seems a side effect that they would congregate in the only places that don't throw them out, so essentially just this situation would tend to occur, much like leper colonies.

11. Is there an assumption that sex offender = pedophile?
Ugh. I just served jury duty on a civil commitment case (determining whether a sex offender continued to be a sexually dangerous person).

I hate to say I have some sympathy for the sex offenders but I do - their past will always haunt them, whether they have been punished and had treatment to control their urges/behavior - it doesn't seem to matter.
