Palin’s Popularity Sinks To A New Low

A fun nugget buried in some new Gallup numbers suggests the slow and clumsy rollout of the new Sarah Palin isn’t going all that well:

Palin became a bit of a sensation after John McCain tapped her as his running mate last August. But over the course of the campaign, her image suffered, going from a 53% favorable rating immediately after the 2008 Republican National Convention to 42% by the end of the campaign.

Palin’s ratings have not recovered, and her current 40% favorable rating is the lowest for her since she became widely known after last year’s Republican convention.

Not only is Palin at her lowest favorability yet, her unfavorability ratings have hit a high of 50%. She’s also tanking among independents: Only 41% view her favorably, versus 48% who view her unfavorably.

Which sugggests a bit of a dilemma for Palin as she seeks to improve her national political profile as a private citizen. In order to break through into the national conversation, she’s resorted to harsh, attention-grabbing assaults on Obama and his policies, which she and her ghostwriters have executed with undeniable virtuosity (see Panels, Death).

This approach seems to have hardened her emotional grip on Palin Nation. Her popularity is soaring among Republicans, with 69% of them viewing her favorably. But it may be alienating everyone else, complicating (to put it mildly) efforts to broaden her appeal, which everyone keep saying she has to do in order to be viable in 2012.

8. I still think there will be a Playboy spread!
As her popularity dwindles and she becomes more and more desperate for attention, I still think we are eventually going to see Sarah in a photo shoot on a bear skin rug. Hef is just waiting for the right moment!!! LOL

And as a heterosexual female, no, I won't be buying the issue for myself, but I MIGHT be guilty of delightedly buying some copies and anonymously leaving them on the doorsteps of several Palin fanatics that I know!!!

Aw, please, come on Hef!!!!

10. Great comment by Liam:
A Modest Proposal.

Why not have Ms.Palin replace Mr. PhlegmBall in the group that is purchasing The St. Louis Rams NFL team.

She could give the halftime locker room pep speeches, about how to go all mavericky; how to play like real Americans, how to handle split ends, and how to keep an eye on Rusher.

After the ball has been snapped for the third quarter, she could inspire them to just give up on winning the game, and just quit playing.

14. Palin's popularity is rising in a rapidly shrinking subgroup of America
And that's self-identified Republicans.

That's the only thing she can comfort herself with.

24. I wouldn't go that far
Calling or otherwise insinuating that someone is "subhuman" is THEIR tactic.

They're seriously deluded and catering to the less intelligent or less informed.

But not subhuman.

28. Isn't a prerequisite for being human the capacity to empathize with the plight of others?
If so, how does this affect your contention that Republicans are "not subhuman"?

32. Not necessarily
The ability to empathize can easily be eliminated by indoctrination and fear. Look at the child soldiers in Africa.

And sociopathy isn't that uncommon in any population. It just seems that sociopaths in America seem to be attracted to the Republican party becuase it provides validation for their point of view.

Empathy can be taught and encouraged. But don't look for that in the Republican party. They live in an angry, mean and depressing world.

governor's position and her statements on record. She believed that because * ascended that this country only promoted on the cult of personality, and she didn't even have that. She is deluded and has a massive ego. Her 15 minutes of fame are up.

Then she can continue to exploit her kids and make lots of money doing so. I have always viewed her as a joke. Even before Tina Fey parodied Palin.

Also: "She’s also tanking among independents: Only 41% view her favorably, versus 48% who view her unfavorably."

Dear 41% of Independents: If you ever approved of Sarah Palin in any way, you're not only an idiot, you're not an independent either. Claiming to be an independent isn't going to make us like you. It doesn't work for Beck either. If you valued rational thought you wouldn't like Palin in the first place. You're not fooling anyone but yourselves.

29. Palin is balloon boy/Anna Nicole Smith/Michael Jackson/Lindsay Lohan/
Edited on Fri Oct-16-09 11:25 AM by tblue37
Jon and Kate. IOW, she is a media creation. The American media always shine the spotlight on trainwrecks and publicity whores rather than on actual news. It's all carnival all the time.

Even worse, they never stop. Once someone "juicy" has landed in the spotlight, for whatever reason, they will drag the "story" out forever. Anyone who has ever crossed paths with the balloon boy family will still be getting interviewed months or years from now. Similarly, Palin will always have a "big news page" on Huffington Post and will always be considered a "story."

(Lindsay Lohan and Jon and Kate actually have their own "big news pages" on HuffPo. Even though Arianna complained on Ed Schultz's show yesterday that the balloon boy story wasn't even a story and shouldn't be allowed to swallow up news time, her own site still offers at least as much tabloid junk as actual news--and probably more.)
