Church to Host Book Burning
Church to Host Book Burning

A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music. The website for the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C., says there are "scriptural bases" for the book burning. The site quotes Acts 19:18-20: "And many that believed, came and confessed and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts, brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

6. They're burning Bibles?
Maybe someone can clue me in...what's their gripe with versions other than the KJV? Is there something in particular that's wrong with the NIV, New American, etc?

7. Let 'em do as they want -- they're not burning my books or impacting any libraries . . .
and they expose themselves as the whackjobs they are by burning their own books.

It's a two-fer for the Amazing Gracers: They get to lead by example and be a cautionary tale for all, just by playing out their destructive fantasies.

And with only 14 parishioners, I can't imagine they'll have all that many books or records on hand.

11. Only 14 people go to that church.
It's a publicity stunt. Local radio even the conservitive ones were smack talking them today. News 14 did a segment that made them look like fools. The are burning Billy Grahms books that's not going over well with Christians round these parts. Please pound this story, but please don't blame NC as a whole.

13. Were these folks to phone me up I would suggest they use the fire to
have a wiennie roast and toast marshmallows and s'mores and build their community of old and young over a roaring fire, as opposed to using it to destroy books.

So far though, our phone hasn't rung.

17. Wait a minute. That Bible verse sounds like they burned silver "books"
and pulled it all together to make a bunch of silver. Just like:

"CASH FOR GOLD"

It was definitely a work of collecting "money".

..."and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

21. When they find out that God considers burning His sacred texts an unforgivable sin...
Boy will their faces be red!

No, I'm just kidding.

Why aren't there any people on our side of the political spectrum who bomb the somewhat innocent like these assholes?

Oh, wait, I forgot. They're crazy and we (for the most part) aren't.

Still, when these people die, I will metaphorically piss on their graves. Good impending riddance, fuckheads!

23. The Joke's On Them
And ALL burners of media in whatever form. Why? Because they have to BUY the offending material in order to have it to burn. Do you think the people who wrote those books CARE what people do with it after they've paid their money? I certainly wouldn't. I'd happily take my royalty check to the bank whistling a happy tune. And even better than that, don't they realize that by calling attention to all these "blasphemous" works, it not only creates more "buzz" and curiosity for that item (thereby leading to an increase in sales just from "looky-loos" who want to find out what all the hubbub is about), it also makes folks like me, who LIVE to piss these people off, want to go out and buy the "offensive" items in question.

I know that when I finish the novel I'm currently writing, I'm going to openly LOBBY the religious whack-jobs to have massive book-burnings of it. They'll probably oblige me too, because it contains spiritual themes not sanctioned by the whack-job religious right.

30. on a semi-related note ...
at a second hand store, on half-price Monday, I picked up a book for half price. And by "half price", I mean half price on the normal "second hand hardcover" price the store set ... I paid 50 cents for it ... (and I suspect that was overcharged for the content ...)

Rudy Giuliani's "Leadership".

First edition.

autographed ... and I know it's signed and not a "printed" signature, because the ink from the marker bled through to the other side of the page.

One day, I might put it on e-bay ... but aren't these things more valuable after the person has passed from this mortal coil?

(related: Also found "A Book" by Desi Arnez, a personalized autographed copy of a Rocky Bleier book, an autographed copy of a quotes book by Art Linkletter, and a regional interest, a "political corruption" book, personal copy of local Cleveland reporter, now deceased, Neville "Nev" Chandler)

26. I believe Acts 19:32 applies here:
"The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there."

That's from the NIV, btw.

I have been looking to see if there are any planned protests of the book burning, but I haven't found any yet. I think it would be funny as hell to go protest dressed as Satan.

He seemed to be quite familiar with the books of what are now called "the Old Testament," and I don't think King James was like, you know, born yet.
